jonathan groff lucky i wanna bend his ass over a table or i would have not watched all this shit
I didn’t think Jonathan Groff could be more perfect, but then he went and played a gay atheist in this film and now he’s beyond perfection to me.
Feels like a film that you will get miles more out of should you be familiar with the Sedaris short story it's based off of, but even if not it tackles the (unfortunately) common experience of being gay in religious spaces. There is a dangerous contradiction inherent when dogma claims both universal acceptance but asks one to deny their identity. Continuing to exist inside such space is impossible without taking undue trauma, yet those who purport such beliefs will only see people failing the religion rather than the other way around.
Some cringe racist jokes tho. Were these present in the original source material?
He's a student at Yale. He's an atheist. He takes a trip to Oregon. He's now a christian. Note to self; don't visit Oregon.
Takes a little while to really get to its greater point but C.O.G. nails its themes and message very well.
It displays the vulnerable, unsafe position many people find themselves in when they’re drawn into religious spaces later in life. How they are encouraged to become fully dependent on these religious institutions and communities. And just how abrupt those spaces of “we love all” change to ones of hate-mongering the moment you feel safe enough to reveal yourself as an “other” in the eyes of the faith. I lived it and I know many who lived it and I see C.O.G. as a competent and honest depiction of that lived experience for many.
The church is not a safe space…
In this one a young man (Kristof's voice in Frozen) who just finished grad school decides to Grapes of Wrath it....by leaving everything behind and start work at an apple farm. He does this so he can see "how the other half lives". During the course of the movie he meets many people...most of them are not nice people. Learning what C.O.G. means is a small mystery in the movie. There are some memorable characters in the movie...with Denis O'Hare playing a Desert Storm vet and Dean Stockwell playing an apple farmer...being my favorites.
Despite those performances the rest of the movie was difficult to watch. The movie gets us to ask many questions....but it never gets around to answering…
its been nearly a year since i watched c.o.g. and to this day the wall of dildos still haunts me
it's really funny to me that the quote on the poster is "david sedaris fans will be thrilled!" like it's the only group to whom you can recommend this movie
'Child of God' if you're wondering.
Apparently based on an essay, this is a thoroughly watchable story of a highly educated gay man trying to earn a simple living in a place where neither his sexuality nor his intellect is particularly welcome. Those who have suffered prejudice because of either of those things will definitely relate, it's handled sensitively and maturely.
The acting's fantastic, especially Jonathan 'please press Fincher to make more Mindhunter' Groff who is very, very good as the titular frustrated and put-upon young man.
Just go watch the 'Miseducation of Cameron Post' it achieves the same thing while being WAY less triggering and being far more clear with it's story. This films tone is conflicted. Althought the character is MEANT to be conflicted it feels like by the end there are still issues here where it paints somethings in a negative light that most likely wasn't intentional. Jonathan Groffs performance was good though.
...can you guys please suggest me more LGBT movies? I've seen all the main stream ones but there's gotta be more. I'm sure of it
this was not the gay little apple farm slay i wanted.... i just simply do not understand a single thing that happened
"The bible says--"
"I know what the bible says."
"Then what's your problem with it?"
"It's poorly-written."
