maybe a little too ambitious for it's own good, and also simultaneously underwhelming, but i honestly LOVED the concept and ending enough to forgive it's flaws
also: original screenplays like this are an absolute NECESSITY. even if they don't hit their mark perfectly, they still make most churned out mainstream hollywood scripts look ridiculously lazy in comparison, and are completely worth the risk of creating and putting out into the world
my whole life has been surrounded by the fragility of masculinity and the men that it curses. my father, many of my old friends, and lots of other people that I care about. I've never seen a film so perfectly portray how fragile men can be and how much they care about being the strongest one in the room. being a woman in a world of men who are like Jason Sudeikis' character is so scary sometimes, and I cannot believe how relatable Anne Hathaway's character was.
the finale has to be one of the most important moments in cinema, honestly, and made me and Ariel sob like babies. men can truly be terrifying when their masculinity takes over, and…
Was not expecting to be intimidated by Jason Sudeikis of all people today
this is one of the best movies about toxic masculinity ever made and STILL it's going over men's heads? my dudes i do not know what else we gotta do. anyway anne hathaway is A QUEEN and this also has the best final shot i've ever seen what a win for feminism and me personally
we need more movies that call out toxic masculinity & male entitlement and we need them now!!!!
I have problems with Colossal.
I'll start with the good bits.
Hathaway is a delight. She understands the physicality of comedy extremely well. Her timing here, both verbally and physically, is perfect.
Which brings me to the comedy. Nacho Vigalondo proved with his film Timecrimes that he really gets situational and especially uncomfortable humour. Colossal is no different. The first two acts are, specifically in this regard, truly outstanding.
And then there's Sudeikis who surprised me considerably by giving life to a character with an arc that's extremely complex and probably shouldn't work. Yet he pulls it off with apparent ease, making it a performance that can only be admired.
These things combined with a truly original premise should be…
Alright, so I originally saw this movie at TIFF several months ago and I pretty much hated it. I went in expecting one thing and got something completely different.
Upon seeing it again, Colossal is fantastic. This movie is brutal. At times it's actually pretty hard to watch. There's some very dark shit in this film. This movie is essentially about alcoholism, mental illness, anger management, abusive relationships, broken dreams. There is some comedy to lighten things up and it works, but man this is a heavy handed flick below the surface.
Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis give outstanding performances. Both of them play incredibly flawed characters and they completely knock it out of the park. Very impressed with them. Easily Jason's best performance to date.
I already felt weird enough about my crush on Jason Sudeikis now it's SO MUCH WORSE
Never less than engrossing and very funny but am I nuts or is it almost entirely incoherent? The kaiju stuff doesn't work at all as a metaphor for her alcohol abuse (which frankly doesn't seem so bad to begin with), and the catharsis supposedly offered by the final scenes is entirely unearned as a result.
jealous men who feel entitled to women are more terrifying than a monster destroying south korea? more likely than you'd think!
