This film turned out to be so much different from what I imagined but in a good way. This is one of those movies that rejects genre classification, for Ant Timpson and Toby Harvard compiled a variety of elements, emotions, and oddities and blended them together seamlessly.

The lady introducing this at the Melbourne Film Festival said that it was "a gender bending movie". So at some point I was waiting for Elijah Wood to start transitioning until I finally realised she meant to say genre bending.
I really like this movie! I don’t want to give to much away but the movie you think you start out with isn’t at all the movie you end with. It is listed as horror but maybe grindhouse but not horror! Check it out!

The amount of respect I have for Elijah Wood and Daniel Radcliffe, who make fun fucked up movies with their blockbuster paychecks, could never be measured.
With no other actor can you go from Frodo Baggins, to choking out people who have a roll of toilet paper trailing out of their ass. More power to you for that, Elijah, have whatever haircut you want in a movie; be happy.

Therapeutic for anyone with daddy issues, a crush on Michael Smiley, a tendency to always call Wood that 'chap from Lord of the Rings, a dream of living outdoors and intentions to try that erotic asphyxiation thing.
It'll cure you of all of the above.
The less you know about this, the better. Just know that it's bloody brilliant.
Possibly the strongest opener to FrightFest since The Guest. Darkly funny, bizarro, eye-wateringly vicious (never seen scissors and plastic wrap put to such brutal use!) and impossible to second guess. It's got a mean streak as wide as a Chelsea Smile, flirting briefly with supernatural and psychodrama moves, before settling into its own psychotic groove. As you might expect, given the title, Oedipus looms large, and it's no surprise that Aphex features on the soundtrack. Not the obvious choice though, 8MM already did that; instead it's an unexpectedly poignant moment that bridges a tonal shift nicely.
Fair warning to anyone who cares, I'm gonna be lagging way behind with these FrightFest write-ups and I'll probably be quite laconic. Time is…

This is why nobody writes letters any more.
Elijah Wood visits his father that he has not seen since he is a baby and a bunch of bad stuff happens. The first 45 minutes of this film should be 30 minutes and that last 45 minutes of this film should be an hour. The pacing is really off and it makes the first half of the film feel a little boring, with some of the stuff being pointless. When the big reveal comes I was excited, but also annoyed that I had wasted so much time.
