  We get so few good movie comedies these days it sometimes seems like Hollywood has forgotten how to make them. To date, there’s exactly one traditional comedy among the 25 top-grossing movies of the year, the Sandra Bullock rom-com The Lost City. Economics surely play a role in this sad state of cinematic affairs; comedies don’t travel as well internationally as less dialogue-heavy genres, and audiences don’t seem to want to travel to theaters for anything except big-budget spectacles. So movie studios make fewer and fewer comedies, and audiences starved for laughs look for them elsewhere.

  I couldn’t even tell you the last time I laughed out loud at a new movie comedy — before I watched Confess, Fletch. That’s the bottom line here: This movie is funny.

  What if I told you that a studio comedy comes out this week with a terrible trailer, no word of mouth/buzz, seemingly no marketing budget/campaign to speak of, and it’s actually quite good??*

  I don’t understand what happened. This movie is just extremely solid throughout.  Hamm does a phenomenal job of embodying the character mostly because his funniest moments are smaller than you might be used to with Comedy Hamm. He’s kind of doing something closer to those moments where Don Draper cracked a good joke and less the big broad character stuff from Kimmy Schmidt/SNL and it really suits him and the role quite well.

  Very amiable diet Soderbergh. Hamm is having a lot of fun (nice to see him reunited with Slattery). Feels like a pilot for a streaming series I'd absolutely watch.

  Takes what feels like in terms of plot trajectory should be a dark paperback neo-noir, and channels it through some charmingly light and sincere screwball/caper energy. Really respect that this has pretty minor, lowkey aspirations and successfully hits them all in a way that feels consistently effortless even if it does kind of prevent it from being particularly memorable. There are so many wonderful supporting performances with just enough goofy personality that I never got tired of seeing Hamm react to them with funny faces and bursts of wit and wordplay. He’s clearly having a blast and I loved his Stan Smith, Lakers hat and suit drip. Would absolutely watch more of these.

  Kinda forgot I watched this. Funny at points but there’s no real tension in the mystery and it feels like a strung-together web series. Despite all of this I’m annoyed it just got dumped on VOD/in a handful of theaters :(

  I must admit that I had a really good time with this. The dry sarcastic humor is completely up my alley. Jon Hamm is really inspired casting and he works really well here. I don’t remember much from the Chevy Chase films, so I’m not bound by any allegiance to those. I can only speak to this version which is a fun and funny mystery/caper. 
  Vibe was similar to The Kid Detective from 2020 which I loved. If you liked that flick, you might enjoy this one as well.

  As a young man of a certain age, I loved loved loved the 1985 Fletch movie with Chevy Chase. I've seen it so many times I can probably quote 2/3 of the script. (And, thus, smiled when this movie's climax featured a line from the original.) My love of that movie led me to Gregory McDonald's series of Fletch books, which in time I grew to love substantially more than the film. The Fletch of the books is different than the guy Chevy played: still a smug wiseass with a gift for aggravating everyone he meets, but much less silly and above-it-all than the film version.   i get why some folks are upset that this wasn't given a bigger theatrical footprint, but it's literally a perfect movie to watch from your couch.

  so, yeah, i totally agree that hollywood should be making more of these quality mid-budget comedies for grownups (or "adult movies," as kevin costner would call them), it's just that streaming DOES feel like the natural home for them in the year of our lord 2022. and who could argue that the world wouldn't be a much better place if netflix used its money to make the entire series of fletch novels into little gems like this instead of giving us dreck like 'red notice' and 'gray man.'
