Watching rom-coms as a lovesick Korean-American teen, I internalized a gnawing fear that no one could fall for me because I didn’t look like those blonde, wide-eyed women leads. If Crazy Rich Asians had existed, perhaps I would have recognized my black hair as ebony rather than coal, my almond-shaped eyes as marquise-cut gemstones rather than bitter pills.
The above is a thing I wrote for a recent Bustle piece about what this film means to me. The below is an expansion of this idea.
I spent over 20 years of my life hiding the Korean half of me, emphasizing my Italian half instead. In middle school, I checked “white” on forms and insisted that my hair was brown not black…
the last three scenes in this movie make for as satisfying an ending as i've ever seen in a romantic comedy, thanks to some very clever (and concise) writing and the inarguable fact that Michelle Yeoh is an ab-so-lute LEGEND in her own time.
I'm editing my initial review, because I honestly wrote a lazy joke here as a placeholder and I don't like that it's become my most popular review on this site. I don't want to write a joke here; this film is monumentally good. all I'll say is this: CONSTANCE WU DESERVES THIS!!!
IT’S NOT 🙅🏽♀️❌ MY 🙋🏽♀️ JOB 🗣 TO 👀 MAKE 🤐 YOU 👈🏻 FEEL LIKE 🤢 A MAN 🤦🏽♂️ 🤡
I CAN’T 😖 🙅🏽♂️ MAKE YOU 👉🏽 SOMETHING 💆🏽♀️ YOU’RE NOT 😳☠️
i legitimately love how many things in this movie were so unapologetically Asian (and for Asian people) that they did not care to take time and explain them for general (read: white, american) audiences.
the acting is rote, the comedy doesn’t land for me, the characters’ actions and conflicts are all handled so strangely, and i do not think jon m. chu is a very good director– but if only for the wedding scene, i hope the production designer for this movie gets the courtesy Oscar nom that is usually reserved for some boring ass period piece where all the dresses have seventy angles
every actor, every costume, every set piece, every piece of jewelry, every single element of this movie was RADIANT! you cannot look directly at the screen or you will be blinded by how extraordinarily beautiful everything is. it’s like looking into the sun

I'm sorry I just don't understand. The first hour and a half is so devoid of anything interesting I can't warrant anything other than the rating I've given it
This is a perfect new direction for the rom-com genre. I am not a member of the Asian/Asian-American community, but I hear nothing but praise for what this film has accomplished in terms of representation, bringing a positive, glamorous experience to life that is rarely demonstrated in mainstream media. I don't connect with it on a personal level, but I can appreciate what this film has done for bringing pride to its community members. On the surface, it's a cute love story that doesn't reinvent love stories, but yeah, it's super cute. Beyond that, it breaks cultural barriers to represent the Asian/Asian-American experience in a way that is hopefully as enlightening to other viewers as it was to me, whether one identifies as a member of that community or not.
I thought this was going to be really pick me up n cute but ,,, I cried???? it’s actually quite moving in parts and has a much deeper storyline than one might expect. Entertaining and heartwarming, but also more than that. actually am pleasantly surprised!
Endlessly funny and a genuinely refreshing depiction of Asian people and their culture in film. This film hits such a lovely balance between the fish out of water narrative, relatable comedy and a true love story you can get behind. There is something for everyone. Can’t wait for the sequel.
Wife Review: There are a fantastic group of actors in this film who when put together have made something fantastic. This film has everything, romance, drama, a dead fish and Awkwafina. Love it.
Every time i watch this movie, i like it more and more. I feel like it’s the only chick-flick/rom-com we have had in a while.
I did genuinely enjoy this movie, but holy fuck the first 25 minutes and the final 15 minutes were riddled with romcom cliches to the extent that if you put a random blonde American woman in with Matthew McConaughey I’d have been convinced I’d watched this film before.
The ending felt very forced too. It should have been a cliche airport interruption proposal and Nick leaving his family behind, but apparently after 100 minutes of his mum abusing Rachel she’s meant to have a massive change of heart instantly because she left a game of mahjong? There was no reason for his mum to give her blessing, especially when it’s still going to have the same impact on the business and family...
Kept on saying “I can’t believe how crazy rich these Asians are”. Definitely better than I thought it would be and some of the set pieces and locations are crazy rich. The story actually has a lot of heart but some of the one liners are unforgivably terrible.
