Desperately needs a documentary(Deconstructing Rem Lezar) explaining the conception of one of the most deranged and damaging VHS tapes that a guidance counselor could have given to a child in the late 80's.
My favorite part was when they questioned the existence of the Twin Towers. Maybe they knew.
This FUCKING AMAZING piece of shit is on YouTube.
One of the best bad movies I've seen in years.
Absolute mind-shattering insanity. I'm 90% sure that Rem Lezar is a demon. I’m 100% sure that he is a sexual predator.
"Creating Rem Lezar" is a 1989 production directed by Scott Zakarin. In actuality, the film is conventionally something of a children's sing-along musical that you could probably check out for free at the local library back in the day but within today's world it has marinated into a context of cult fandom. Really, loosely based on the narrative of themes like inclusion and friendship versus a direct application of a educational topics like math or science allows "Creating Rem Lezar" to go conventionally of the rails, being a product of complete obscurity. It's like a perfect storm of being so horrendously ridiculous in its subject matter yet so endearing as it does openly hold its heart on its sleeve that…
One of the more bizarre things I've ever seen, and I've made a specialty of bizarre things. Feels at turns like it might become a horror movie, a PSA, or a cult induction video, but it's SUPPOSED to be (I think) a musical tribute to the power of a child's imagination... but with the stilted dread of Lynch and the visual effects of pre-MTV music videos.
Also, the movie makes a big deal out of Rem Lezar at nearly every moment of every song, without ever really explaining what Rem Lezar's deal is. They just act like this is a beloved character we all already know. Watching it, Audrey kept being like, "But who is Rem Lezar," and I'd point to the screen and say, "He's just that dude," and she'd respond "But WHO is he?" with increasingly frenzied bafflement.
Rem Lezar's just Rem Lezar, man.
FROM ANOTHER PLACE
NOT FROM OUTER SPACE
BUT FROM SOME PLACE EVEN HIGHER
I feel like this is what people who get to join Jeffrey Epstein's island have to watch as initiation. Absolutely awful, but so incredibly fun and, at least to me, hilarious to watch. You can tell that this is something that was likely made with the nicest and simplest of intentions. It has the feel of a drug PSA for kids, and at its core it's a musical about the importance of imagination and believing in yourself. Not bad messaging for children at all. However, there are small notable things about it that are just slightly off in the exact right ways where it more feels like…
At some point I just lowered the volume a little bit and put the Uncut Gems soundtrack over the film and honestly, it made it more terrifying
