Crossfire Trail is a decent Western.
Selleck is good in the lead but somehow doesn't seem as engaged as a Randolph Scott or Joel McCrea always did in all the Westerns they made. Harmon is good as the villain but I can't help feeling like he'd make a more interesting protagonist... bring that complex/two-sidedness to a hero character and you've got a great lead. Brimley is fun to watch as always but Brad Johnson is miscast as the bad gunfighter. Johnson is a leading man, a John Payne, and feels phony as the heavy.
I don't think the director, Simon Wincer, has much of a visual sense. There's a lot of opportunity here to punch up the material and he just lets it lay flat for the most part.
But the film has a good enough story, exciting enough fights, and Virginia Madsen is always easy on the eyes.
