  Nowadays, the concept of homosexuality being considered a mental illness seems absurd to most of us in the civilized world. We, in large part, owe this now common understanding to the genuinely courageous men and women profiled in the outstanding Cured. Charting the decades-long fight for the recognition of gay and bisexual identities as just another minority in a diverse world, Cured is an eye-opening crystallization of a crucial or as one LGBTQ organization puts it, “the greatest gay victory."

  The film may be relatively short but it nonetheless deftly and clearly covers all of the intricate pieces of the groundbreaking movement to remove homosexuality…

  VIFF 2020: Film #7

  A must-see doc about the trailblazers who fought what must have been an exhausting, humiliating, and absolutely enraging fight for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community in the 50's-70's. It's absolutely humbling watching this as a gay man in 2020, and makes me admire how much strength and resolve those who came before me must have had just to be able to have an ounce of my own privilege to live comfortably day to day.

  ☆"Like almost anything else that is learned, it can be unlearned."☆

  I code medical diagnoses for a living, in an internal medicine group practice. (That's where my official username comes from: the ICD-10 code V97.33XA.) I like it a lot. I get to read interesting notes, help charts stay accurate and ready for audits, and get patients' insurances to pay for stuff instead of them. Anyone knowing me wouldn't be surprised to learn that I try to code to as much accuracy and detail as possible, in regimented order, and with as much complexity as I can to highlight the detail and level of medical decision-making by the clinician.

  It was pretty difficult to make it through the first few minutes of this but showing how horrific the prejudice was in the 50s and 60s was very effective in showing just how brave the people who fought against it were. Trying to change the ruling of a body of psychiatrists is actually an odd topic for a documentary but I ended up wanting a bit more on this and less on the context.

  Cured is a documentary that takes viewers inside the campaign that led to a pivotal yet largely unknown moment in the struggle for LGBT equality: the American Psychiatric Association's 1973 decision to remove homosexuality from its list of mental illnesses.

  Shocking, hard hitting and tough to watch at times, this documentary is a real eye opener and essential viewing.   Mardi Gras Film Festival 2021 ~

  Wow, this was amazing. By far one of the best documentaries I have ever seen. 
  It’s amazing to see the stories and how the world came to be to let me a gay man be able to be out and proud but also to use my job to help other LGBTQIA+ young people to do the same. I recommend everyone watch it wether you are apart of the community or not ~ Five Stars.
