Many site the great work Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare as the great love story of the ages. Romance, lust, tragedy. Songs, multiple films, and plays are still brought to the masses centuries after the play was first penned. But I think we have missed the true beautiful love story.
Cyrano de Bergerac was written in 1897 by Edmond Rostand and has since had a few memorable film adaptations, this being the most popular and critically hailed as the most accurate of the lot.
The character of Cyrano de Bergerac is someone I think has aged like wine over the one hundred plus years as a tale of enlightenment to the self loathing romantics of the modern age.

Everything is great about this film, the cast, the costumes, the music, the cinematography, and especially Gérard Depardieu's performance as Cyrano. Highly recommended.
The classic story of a hopeless romantic nobleman comes to life in this sumptuous production based on Edmond Rostand 1897 play. Cyrano de Bergerac is a tale about being true to yourself and not compromise your principles in pursue of your own interests despite the adversities. It's also about love as an inner force that moves us, and lust for life.
Gérard Depardieu is excellent in one of his most accomplished performances, showing his range and delivering each line in such exquisite manner; he effortlessly embodies the charismatic, passionate, eloquent and vulnerable title character. A strong ensemble cast, and lavish production design and costumes complete this delightful experience.
Cyrano de Bergerac is more than just a romantic period piece; it's a tragic ode to love.
One of my 1000 recommended films.
This fine French film (with rhyming subtitles provided by Anthony Burgess) stars Gérard Depardieu in perhaps his best performance, as Cyrano, the romantic adventurer who pens ghost letters and creates conversation for his friend to the woman he secretly loves. A play which crackles with energy and wit as well as being truly touching, this fine version excels all expectations.
Anne Brochet is a fine Roxane, never sure of the truth until it is too late, while Vincent Perez is colourless (or just overshadowed by Depardieu?) as Christian. Pick of the many great scenes in this - the duel early on where Cyrano rattles off descriptions of his over-large nose while sword-fighting; the scene…
Watching this and watching Power Rangers *respectfully* at the same time just gave me a whole set of emotions that I didn't think I need. I hate Turbo: A Power Rangers Story even more.
I was largely unimpressed with Cyrano De Bergerac in its first act. After years of my dad claiming it was the greatest film of all time, and his all time favourite, and after the glorious score that plays over the opening titles, my expectations were sky high. And throughout the first hour, I was hugely disappointed. However throughout the second act, I began to realise how invested i was in this story (even though I knew how it plays out, after reading the play). The second act is a marvel of set design and cinematography, so I admittedly found myself admiring the film more than truly loving it...
Then came the third act. The glorious third act. It floored me.…
Well, I was pretty bored during the film.
This film was quite wordy and seemed a tad drawn out. The lines can become cumbersome at times. However excellent work by the cinematographers and the scenes shot in twilight. The images are very beautifully done and especially in the scene of a death, a very beautiful consistency in the lighting between shots.
