Between Dances With Wolves and Open Range, Kevin Costner seems to have both perfected and monopolized the Achingly Dull Western genre. This movie is The New World but longer, more boring, less profound, ugly to look at, overrated, cheesy, and more pretentious, with terribly undeveloped romance, less dancing, more wolves, male nudity, awful hair, battle scenes not filmed by Emmanuel Lubezki, and unnecessary voiceovers more monotonous than Siri with strep throat. 1 star for the landscapes, 1 star for Dirty Paws or whatever that wolf's name was.
(Also, the only other good 1990 film I have seen is Miller's Crossing, and it deserved every single Oscar this film won (Best Picture, Cinematography, Editing, Score, Director — minus Adapted Screenplay) so, so much more. It's kind of upsetting, actually. And I'm not even gonna mention the whole GoodFellas situation.)
