Catacombs, hazy dreams, an isolated doom island drenched in wetness, plenty of blasphemy, fish, crucified demon nuns, nutso island inhabitants, all mixed together with some damn fine visually stunning depravity. This Early 90’s Italian Lovecraftian jam is filled with plenty of classic Euro-vibes of Fulci, Argento, and Soavi through a 90’s lense... and that’s definitely my kinda bullshit.
Impressive debut from director Mariano Baino with its heart very much in the right place, and despite its low budget trappings this is artfully constructed with style and builds a nice atmosphere the process. Some folks might not jive with the pacing—but it didn’t bother me, especially with that lurking payoff. I kinda loved this movie... would pair with Dagon for an interesting double bill.
A definite recommend for Italian Horror fiends... Honestly the only thing this gem is missing is a score by Goblin.
