a jet black legal drama about slowly realizing that we all live in the jaundiced, sickly glow of american institutions and a new stone cold classic of ruin-the-rest-of-your-night cinema. a foundational, “respected” corporation can intentionally poison every single one of us for decades and if we sacrifice our bodies & spend decades of our lives in the monotonous hell of proper channel resistance we just might be able to cost them one half of one year’s profit. im really taken with how haynes managed to take something that on a scene-by-scene basis doesn’t appear to stray too far from unassuming biopic territory but in look and mood feels almost apocalyptic. sorta like if The Insider was shot like a horror movie; a benihana logo has never been more terrifying.

Not without its issues (pacing, occasional histrionics, a little too much digital teal & orange), but I'm totally on board for all of it because this is some classic auteurist gun-for-hire smuggling. Exactly how you do this stuff.
From the moment that the film opens in 1975 with an extended tribute to Jaws, Dark Waters becomes an exercise to see just how much aesthetic care and precision can be brought to bear on the increasingly moribund Very Important Issue thriller. Haynes films the poisoned land of West Virginia with desaturated tones that give it an apocalyptic tone (complete with a field of scorched earth and burial mounds for diseased cows that looks like something out of the Great War). He then contrasts that with Midwestern hubs like Cincinnati that look, in comparison, like the most modern and sleek cities in America, giant office buildings framed to look as if they are colliding with each other at sharp angles…

You should already be interested if you haven't watched it already. If nothing else, this is an Important Movie that never loses its grip as a sickly, infuriating experience.
Second viewing for a thing I'm writing for Vulture. Not without its stock docudrama elements, but what lingers is an almost tactile sense of the cancerous rot that's taken hold of the culture. This is no mere exposé of Dupont knowingly poisoning people, but about the corporate tentacles that grip every aspect of our lives. And it comes through in the *look* of the film, too: You could turn the sound off and Ed Lachman's cinematography would tell a story just with its color palette.
