Fresh off Host, director Rob Savage gives us another social media horror flick with a political spin.
Annie Hardy who plays herself here as the protagonist, is an obnoxious, narcissistic, right-winger whose doo doo rhymes are the lowest common denominator. But politics aside, this is a fun shaky cam thrill ride.
There are some great moments of ingenuity with the shot selection, and some special effect feats that make you scratch your head and say “how did they do that?” Parts of the comedy land e.g. the use of a Darth Vader microphone in one scene, but mostly falls flat. Toss it on late at night, in the dark and you might find yourself enjoying it, if you can stomach the main character...
gives a platform for a real racist, anti-vaxxer to express her nauseating views and gain a following, under the guise of being subversive and edgy. there is no subversion to be found here, just cruelty and amplification of ideas that lead to the deaths of disabled people. on top of that, this is one of the most poorly assembled, lazily “topical” and completely unbearable horror films I’ve ever seen. doubt there’s going to be a worse film in 2022 than this. never once funny or scary either!
A horribly abrasive woman is forced to confront the pure, unhinged evil of an Ariana Grande stan
First, Call Her Daddy listeners had The Love Witch,

Oh heck yes! Being a huge fan of Rob Savage’s Host and a number of his short films, I can easily say that Savage is one to keep an eye on, in his sophomore pandemic found footage horror film Dashcam, he keeps the chaos at bay and gore in heaping amounts, but never strays from being exactly what it is; a erratic in-your-face, fuel for headaches, nightmarish ride! this has easily one of the most annoying, toxic, self-centered leads, Annie Hardy—loud and proud anti-vaxxer—who has no respect for anyone or anything, watching her world legit turn upside down was considered a bonus in disguise! Without getting into spoiler territory, Hardy livestreams “Bandcar” which lets people watch as…
Where HOST felt restrained in a tight, moderated way to elicit suspense, DASHCAM feels like total anarchy and I kinda loved it.
Sure the protagonist is toxic and abrasive but that felt like the point, not all stories like this need likable leads and it puts you off guard to expect the unexpected.
And loved the peripheral storytelling progression of the chat and Live viewer counter which felt truly part of the plot at times not just some cool GFX and text an intern wrote to fill the space. Makes me want to watch it again just to see the “live” feed.
Some really effective jumps and scares too, can’t wait to see what Savage does outside the real of a ScreenStory next (and as a fan of his short SALT I have no doubt).
Felt dangerous in the spirit of MAN BITES DOG and that’s a great thing.
