22nd Annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor celebrating: Dave Chappelle, Dave Chappelle: The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor
Celebration of one of the best humans ever.
Got a little misty at the end there when he was talking about his Mom, who said to him,
Sometimes you have to be a lion
To be a lamb like you really are
Because Dave is the GOAT when it comes to speaking your truth.
After my bday binge I knew I wouldn’t be drinking for the rest of the apocalypse, which is mostly fine but it doesn’t feel the same raising my mug of tea when he says,
Be brave.
I like not knowing what’s gonna happen
This is an unavoidably bias review for a tribute to one of the greatest of all time. I've been a life-long stand-up and sketch comedy fan and a fan of Dave Chappelle since Killin' Them Softly in 2000. I'm surprised I'm just now getting to this special in honor of.
I have had different favorite comedians throughout the years, but I have come to realize that Chappelle has been that one consistent contender in my heart througout all of it, even just re-enjoying his body of work during his 12yrs absence. He is a master at exposing and making light of all of the many instances of hypocrisy we operate under on a day to day basis. He has always…
The comedian's Kennedy Center honours are presented in a less linear form than their usual celebrations. Along with the clip show introductions that have become a staple, director Chris Robinson includes footage from local club stints that Chappelle worked leading up to the event, and breaks up the presentations - returning to footage of earlier speeches to emphasize points. Of the presenters, there is a real feeling that Chappelle knows most of them - a welcome change from the recent Twain practice of bringing in random instagram celebrities to court ratings and relevancy. Of those stars present, Neal Brennan is easily the most heartfelt and humorous.
For better or worse, its addition to the Netflix library make his Mark Twain Prize acceptance the tightest of the Dave Chappelle specials on the streaming service - even if the bulk of the broadcast features lesser comics.
Honor your friends while they’re alive
Love others while they’re alive
Appreciate the people around you while you’re alive
Feeling very sentimental having watched this celebration of the comedy icon. Dave Chappelle is and will always be a master. While the seconds turned over, I experienced a revelatory joy thinking about the impact he’s had on me and the friendships I’ve built and maintained over the years, some of which began based on a shared love for the man’s comedy, as well as the many friendships to come in the future because of him also.
If anyone deserves a prize, it’s Dave. For being the voice that sifts through the divided bullshit of modern day in a search to find…
It was getting pretty late. I figured I'd watch half of it and then finish in the morning. I think we all know that Dave is not a morning guy, right? Me neither. I slept in. Neal Brennen kills it, btw.
The exact light-hearted fair I was looking for. Dave is a mensch and this was a very pleasing, funny, and heartwarming presentation. Eloquently edited and smoothly sectioned.
Dave Chappelle is one of the most contemplative comics that I've ever seen. Some of his humor does seem to come just off the cuff, but he thinks about this stuff a lot, he considers all the angles and he points out the idiosyncrasies in all of us. We're all flawed. We all do weird shit that's inexplicable and none of us like to get called out on it. I, for one, am grateful to have someone as considerate as Dave to point out humanity's incongruities.
going up to every art school kid I see: actually stand up comedy is the only art form
I love everything and anything Dave Chappelle so I ate this right up. Chappelle is the greatest comedian of my lifetime and we’re all honored to be alive while he’s working.
Dave Chappelle is a comedian unlike any other, and this documentary is unlike any other either.
Actually very good. Invigorating. Dave is a god. Love his words. What a great way to honor a legend. And love that Miles Davis quote - about playing like yourself. Always a good one. Thank you Dave! What a god.
i just fucking love dave chappelle so much. a lot of my beliefs might be against him, but his fearlessness to say what he wants, in a fair and critical way that is structured and logical is just how he still has my respect. whatever he says has foundation and truth in it that is indisputable and what an illustrious career he has had.
I go back and forth on Chappelle. It's a narrow range of oscillation though. Mostly I just giggle. Even in this tribute I giggled. Needed more stand up though.
