Dave, an artist who has yet to complete anything significant in his career, builds a fort in his living room out of pure frustration, only to wind up trapped by the fantastical pitfalls, booby traps, and critters of his own creation. Once inside, they find themselves trapped in an ever-changing supernatural world, threatened by booby traps and pursued by a bloodthirsty Minotaur.

Honestly the most inspiring film I have seen in a long time. Not even so much in the subject matter as much as the production itself... an inventive indie fantasy film in the style of a horror movie with a Gondry-inspired set constructed entirely out of cardboard. It's fantastic. Gave me the same feeling as when you watch a movie about making a movie. The film itself is good– Dave's position as a restless artist whose fear of failure keeps him from permanent creation hits a little too close to me as someone who is tackling new skills and projects as I avoid writing (I was literally sewing as I watched it) but the real thing that blew me away…
The best Indie film nobody has ever heard of.. about a young artist who is frustrated as he has yet to accomplish anything! He appears to channel his childhood! Tell me that the movie takes live actors into a wonderland made almost entirely from cardboard... and you have my full attention.
Fill it with a jarringly incongruous community of one-dimensional (cardboard?) characters, put them in scenes that strain for laughs, and bring it to a conclusion that isn't nearly as profound as it thinks it is... and you've lost me. I felt trapped inside this thing within 15 minutes, and that had nothing to do with the claustrophobia-inducing nature of its windowless maze. It had everything to do with the rough-draft nature of its screenplay and the lack of chemistry among the cast.
This is such a storytelling mess that I'm reluctant to guess at what it's really about.…
I totally get, and mostly agree with, the criticism I've read of Dave Made a Maze. Yep, its lead character is more cardboardy than the titular maze. Yep, there's moments where it feels there's not enough happening to sustain a feature length. And yep, it straddles a strange line of tone and genre (I would argue this makes it more interesting). But god damn, this film is dripping with fucking creativity and passion. The detail of the sets, the beautiful, bizarre art direction, the design of the cardboard characters and creatures—it's hard to deny the talent and love that this film is bloated with. Dave Made a Maze is not quite satisfying on a narrative level, but it is very satisfying as a delightful and strange visual feast.
Honestly if it weren't for the minotaur and the deadly traps and stuff, I would just live there. That maze looks so gorgeous.

A film that rests on the whimsical inventiveness of its quirky production design but falls flat with a deafening thud due to undeveloped characters and lazy comedy. Would have been better suited as a weird children's adventure film rather than playing into the tropes of a man-child syndrome.
I feel like this is the closest we'll ever come to a House of Leaves adaptation.
Dave made a maze. He sure did. Now he's stuck in it. And like any piece of creation, it is your baby, but also has a life of its own once it's out of your hands. Sometimes it's ugly and sometimes it's beautiful. And sometimes you have to decide, no matter what, you must finish it. Finishing your art is the most important thing.
Unless, of course, it's just a huge waste of time and no one is gonna like it and you wasted years of your life before you realize it. Then just destroy it.
