Synopsis
Dawn is a quiet young teenager who longs for something or someone to free her from her sheltered life.
2014 Directed by Rose McGowan
Dawn is a quiet young teenager who longs for something or someone to free her from her sheltered life.
The whole film had a very creepy/scary feel to it, that was definitely achieved. I was nervous to be watching which is great. The ending is haunting as fuck and the sound design really grabs and twists your beating heart and your terrified attention there. Performances weren't too bad. You are left feeling an intensity.
I was interested to see that Rose Mcgowan didn't write the script. For some reason I thought she would have. I'm more interested in her writing and directing together, I felt that the character of Dawn was quite 2D. But short films are short. And I actually thought the pacing was pretty good... to be able to have such brutal events happen, it was actually…
bitch..... he was literally the most creepy dude i have ever seen besides c*sey affleck how did she not Get A Vibe
Boy @ Dawn: I saw you and thought "What a lonely girl" and I thought that maybe if I talked to you, you wouldn't be so lonely anymore
Me @ Dawn: DAWN!!! 🙅 STAY the FUCK ❌❌ AWAY FROM HIM ! ❌❌ STAY the fuck!!! 🙅❌ Get the FUCK AWAY from HIM!! ❌🙅 FUCK!!! GET AWAY!! 🙅❌❌🙅
I liked the juxtaposition of the cheery and colorful palette of the time period that Dawn is set in and the harsh reality of what can happen to those too precious to see how truly dangerous the world is. Can't wait to see more from first-time director Rose McGowan!
I can appreciate what McGowan's doing/saying with this, but I still don't like it much.
Charmed alum Rose McGowan strongly urges that the best way to watch her 17 minute short, Dawn, is to watch it twice. So I did. Back to back. And it's pretty fantastic.
Dawn stars Tara Lynne Barr (who some of you may recognize from Bobcat Goldthwaite's 2011 satire piece, God Bless America)as a young girl who desperately longs for more in her life despite how much her parents shelter her. Enter Reiley McClendon as the girl's innocent crush...a crush that may not be so innocent after all.
My first go-round with the film, I already recognized just how technically brilliant this is as a film. The colors and cinematography are stunning to witness and McGowan is especially considerate in regards…
sequel where we watch the asshole die and dawn comes back to life with a smile on her face.
Creepy, atmospheric 50’s-set short by Rose McGowan, which I presume is about women being conditioned to accept or remain silent in the face of abuse. There are certain directors whose style I think she is copying a little too obviously here, but still... it certainly looks good and there’s a strong sense of menace.
Okay well this one was just dumb.
I'm gonna start doing these as bulleted lists because it's easier.
- Because I too am totally fine with complete strangers coming to my window in the middle of the night. Charmed even.
- I like the gum montage. Also makes the weird previous scene unnecessary (like seriously why do they come to her house in the middle of the night, I still can't get over it)
- Can we stop it with the "guy who tries to force people to drink" cliche?
- Also, Dawn is clearly concerned about what her mother thinks and wants to hide that people are coming over. Yet she lets the one girl smoke in her house...?…
found this in the youtube comment section and I couldn't agree more.
"Stark and chilling. Nothing to over-analyze here. Culture grooms girls to be complicit in our own demise by training us to be people pleasers for some reward that never arrives. You do not need to conform to a prescribed standard of approval to love and appreciate yourself as you are: This goes for everyone. Keep going, Rose!!"
Boys are evil, blah blah blah. The other chick did nothing. People are evil, but sheltering yourself from life is not the answer.
Between this and Final Girl gee golly I'm thanking my lucky stars I wasn't a bored teenager circa 1950s.
what makes it a good short is the fact that I was utterly engrossed, that I completely forgot it was a short at all and not something I would see on big screen.
guy: * throws a rock at her*
Dawn: my mom will be so mad at me
