Leonard Cohen's chaotic, anthemic, fatalistically horny 1977 album Death of a Ladies' Man is inextricably tied to circumstances of my life this last year and a bit, in the form of a long-standing obsession and long-gestating reimagining by my friend Leon, who sought to adapt this cursed collaboration between Cohen and Phil Spector into a kind of raucous musical cabaret performance exploring the major ills of society: toxic masculinity, sexual disenfranchisement, suburban ennui and general scumfuckery. Through some miracles and the hard work of an assortment of musicians, this passion project came to fruition a week after Spector's long-overdue death; the result is the first great South Australian incel rock opera, "Death of an Adelaidie's Man", a tragicomic cuckhold odyssey…
i heard there was a boring film
with leonard cohen’s music in
but you don’t really care for movies do ya
it starts ok, but soon gets bad
a frankenstein, a ghostly dad
hallucinations caused by a brain tumour
cant be bothered to do any more, anyway this movie was bad don’t watch it.
Brilliantly made and edited film but suffers from multiple flaws as it was executed quite poorly ngl. It started off great but it became dragging and slow at times as the plot wasn't the best and not as intriguing as I thought that it would be because the potential of the film was wasted. Besides the execution, I was a huge fan of the soundtrack, cinematography and just the landscape of the film. It also features a vibrant colour scheme that I liked a lot but overall is a dragging film with flaws here and there.
I had my heart broken a little today so I tried to find a movie to fit my mood . This kind of worked .
One of my favourite movies of 2020 was still enjoyable but didn’t have the same impact as it did first time .
Mainly because when you know what’s going to happen it loses some shine .
Still I needed some Jessica Pare and Suzanne Clement today 💔🥲
Death of a ladies' man
4,5Sterne
I absolutely loved this . It’s not for everyone and I could see why people would pick at some holes but these are the movies that I’m so happy and optimistic about the future of cinema because they are still getting made .
Maybe it was the central character of Byrne reflecting on his life that got to me ? Maybe his relationships with his kids ? Maybe it was because he reminded me of my Dad and had the same condition?
Anyway the story was so ambitious and it allowed a lot of creativity which I loved .
Great cast too the reunion of clement and Pilon from Mommy was an unexpected delight and Jessica Pare just lit up the screen for the short but crucial time she was on screen .
Highly recommend
Should’ve given that script a few more passes. Especially the last two thirds.
There are good parts of this movie but they’re overshadowed by poor pacing, clichéd plot turns, and the most bizarre, lazily thrown together last 20 minutes ever.
It’s a pity because it started out quite well. Gabriel Byrne nails the character, Leonard Cohen’s music is great (who doesn’t love Leonard Cohen) but even those two men - forces of nature - couldn’t prevent the ship of this plot from sinking into the waters of mediocrity.
What should have been a nuanced meditation on death, family, culture and consciousness became the equivalent of an overly long, high budget first year Dawson College Cin/Com project, so far up its own ass it can’t see any sign of meaning in the dark of the void
And you had to drag Grumpy’s into it too? Fack.
