  A small percentage of the population knows about the Deep Web. An even smaller group of people know how to gain access to it, these include security agencies, programmers, engineers, encryptors, non-domain server operators, non-indexed searches, which do not show up in your conventional search engine results (Error 404).
  It also caters to an even relatively smaller number (but growing at an alarmingly rate) of men who indulge their most degenerate impulses by partaking of snuff.

  I think for the uninitiated this film will be extremely confusing. With that in mind, the fact that this was directed by Alex Winter of Bill & Ted fame adds that extra bit of curiousness to a dark documentary where there are three sides to every story. Winter has also managed to rope in his old buddy Keanu Reeves to narrate this often fascinating tale of the birth of Bitcoin, the Silk Road, and the men apparently at it's centre. Many talking heads are interviewed here, players in the whole underground network that attempted, and still are attempting to orchestrate a sea-change in how we conduct certain transactions online.   Most fascinating were aspects of the deep or dark web and how Silk Road and similar projects operate. Is it that easy to ship narcotics through the postal system? I found myself asking more questions about how the sites functioned and wondering who these other mysterious purveyors of the internet's underground were, while the doc spends most of its time considering the legal intrusions of the FBI and questions as to whether or not justice can prevail in the information age.

  For the first 50 minutes, Deep Web is a very interesting documentary that tackles the history of The Silk Road, a deep web site where people could easily buy thousands of drugs and other illegal items and services. It is gripping and fascinating, but then it starts focusing more and more on one of its creators, named Ross Ulbricht, and it slowly starts losing focus as it goes on. A shorter and more focused version would have been more effective.

  'Deep Web' finally made it to Netflix. If unfamiliar, Deep Web is a documentary by Alex Winter (Bill & Ted, Lost Boys) and narrated by Keanu Reeves.

  You may or may not know about what the Dark/Deep Web is, but it is basically a part of the internet that requires special encryption software to access (Tor, I2P) rather than just your regular internet browser (Chrome, Firefox). We only have access to about 10% of the actual 'surface' internet as that's all that is indexed by search engines, the other 90% is the Dark Web. The Dark Web is completely private and can be untraceable which can be a good thing, but also a bad thing. What is on the Deep Web?!…

  While the documentary clearly took sides with the accused, I felt they inadvertently made a better case for the government side of this cyber age 'cat and mouse' game. Was too caught up clearing the name of the internet drug lord instead of being critical to how dangerous this way of drug distribution could be with the wrong masters running the online back alley. Still worth a look at how criminals work today and how the government break their own laws to break their network down.

  Un exhaustivo, coral y nada dogmático relato del caso Silk Road —el gran mercado libre y anónimo de la deep web (o lo que es lo mismo: el gran mercado de drogas de la web oculta)— y del cerebro tras él: Ross William Ulbricht, un personaje fascinante que combinó lucrativa actividad criminal con sólido ideario libertario. Lo mejor del documental es el modo en que se refleja que las (pocas) luces y (muchas) sombras del proceso judicial que terminó con la durísima condena a Ulbricht son el correlato de las complejidades que encierra el asunto de la libertad en Internet.

  Deep Web is a bit of a misnomer, as this documentary does not explore the 'deep web' itself, but rather a specific site on the deep web, and an individual responsible for running said site.

  What is most interesting about this documentary, though, is its pursuit for some sort of moral understanding of the Silk Road. While Alex Winter is very biased in his approach to this site, and the way he perceives both the "Dread Pirate Roberts", as the site moderator is called, and the practices it undertakes, he does pursue a more nuanced understanding of why such a site exists, and what inherent benefits it may offer society.
