31/31: Anime is an underrated resource for horror movies. We are going to mine that resource to find an anime horror movie. (No American animation allowed!)
“If you ever say that again I’ll rip off your fucking head and shit down your neck!”
Keeping in tone with explosive violence, memorable demon designs, great animation, and even some Go Nagai philosical questions, Devilman: Demon Bird is a perfect follow up to the original.
As Devilman stands as the only thing standing between demons and total human extinction, more and more demons are seeking to slay the demon-fused human.
Now that the origin story’s been covered, this OVA lets loose and gives us some…

In an opening that doesn't cleanly follow the near cliffhanger ending of the original film, our supernatural hero Akira Fudo aka Devilman learns that his dead mother's soul has been kidnapped by a big demonic turtle who's got the Freddy Krueger "chest of souls" thing from Nightmare on Elm Street 3 but on his shell, and is voiced (in the English dub at least) by an actor that seems to be trying for Robert Englund's Krueger accent to boot, although to my ears he was sounding closer to a raspy-voiced Boss Hogg. But anywho in order to find the strength to defeat this salty & satanic…
Great animation and creature designs, not to mention a lot of limbs being torn off, flesh rending, and buckets of blood. Not much in the way of story to this one, most of the runtime is fights between demons, but it doesn't overstay it's welcome thanks to all the gore, and it's weirdly pretty to look at. My big complaint is that twice, Devilman is about to be defeated and something happens from basically out of nowhere to save him. Especially the one at the end that really feels like they had a set runtime for this anime and had just reached the time limit. I think I prefer the first Episode because it was a little weirder and more fantastical, but this was a pretty fun, if a little hollow, follow up.
"It was awful seeing what they did to my mother. Stuff like that makes me think I shouldn't have become the Devilman."
"That's crap! You gotta remember your mother was eaten by a demon long before you knew they even existed."
Devil gay man. Demon bird lady. The time has come… for you to lip sync for your life. Good luck and don’t fuck it up.
At first, I felt let down. Even though this and the original were both video releases, Devilman 2: Demon Bird initially feels like a SOV sequel to a cinematic release. It looks cheaper. The content is significantly trashier. I was surprised to see it had the same director because it lacks the impressive pacing, restraint (lol), moody lighting, and sense of artistry of The Birth. It throws us right into the action, and structurally it's pure chaos. But, once I got over the disappointment, I realised how much this has to offer. Sure, it's rough around the edges, but it still has awesome scenes of action. The battle between Devilman and Sirene is brilliant and outrageous, much of set to…
While I think these OVAs are pretty disposable it still bums me out that we never got to see Vol. 3, 4, and 5 animated for some reason. Mostly because I would’ve really liked to see the Vol. 5 ending animated. Devilman the manga has one of the most ballsy endings in all of manga. Not Attack on Titan "holy shit I can’t believe Isayama just said fuck you to the fans and gave us an ending that literally no one asked for" ballsy; more Fire Punch "holy shit I can’t believe Fujimoto just said fuck you to the fans and gave us an ending that literally no one asked for but KINO" kind of ballsy. A shame, really.
From the Devilman trilogy for me the weakest, though still entertaining, entry over all, it was just too tame compared to the first and (especially) third film and was lacking the iconic and outlandish display of violence I kind of expected.
Therefore I’d rank the episodes like this:
1. Apocalypse
2. The Birth
3. Demon Bird
Both these OVAs are a prime time capsule of that late 80s early 90s CARTOONS FOR ADULTS anime boom. First time seeing em here, and they hold up in as much as something true to a Go Nagai manga would. Demon birds with tiddies and all that.
The dub is still pretty much the most worthwhile element of the OVA, but it's not as engaging as the first OVA and I found it to be mostly dull.
The final fight is really good however and I for one really enjoy how stupid the ending was. It's fine for an OVA but mostly forgettable. However we did get the CLASSIC line: "I'm gonna cut off your head and shit down your throat"
