Watched it on a plane. Maybe that was a little condescending of me. "This thing doesn't look super challenging. I'm sure it won't be dampened by airplane conditions." I was ultimately right but where do I get off?
It's surreal to see your favorite Steve Martin performance at the age of 35. Especially if you grew up loving him. It's like falling for a David Blaine card trick on the street when you're a few blocks away and he hasn't even clocked you.
It's not surprising that Oz would go on to work with Caine again in Muppet Christmas Carol. Caine's already giving a "the one human in a muppet movie" performance here alongside human muppets Steve Martin and Glenne…
Do you remember when Steve Martin was amazing?
Do you?!
This may be one of the last examples of him being funny. It's like watching a comet go past realising you'll never see the likes of it again.
OMG, those Scoundrels are Rotten,
With every con that they're plottin'.
People trust what they say,
And willingly pay,
Hoping their lies are forgotten.
Con man movie with some very old-school Hollywood rom-com charm to the way it's been written and performed; feels like the women are a tad underwritten considering the movies it's harkening back to and Oz keeps the whole thing moving at a relaxed, leisurely pace even during the parts when it probably should be getting sharper and faster but Caine and Martin are an undeniably fun odd-couple pairing (vulgar mugging vs. a dapper mustache) and the lavish, ocean-view France vacation environment they pull their jobs in is very well photographed by Michael Ballhaus.
[35mm]
The Ruprecht sequence is the most exceptionally hilarious piece of offensiveness against the mentally disabled that has ever existed or will ever exist. I still believe this is one of the very best comedies of the entire 1980s.
"It is better to be truthful and good... than to not." -Freddy Benson,
I want to learn to be a con man.... looks fun.
Steve Martin and Michael Caine are at their absolute best in this charming and delightful comedy. It's slower paced than film from today but if you can handle that this movie is basically perfect. In addition to a consistently funny script, there are multiple iconic scenes that I still remembered, even though I haven't seen this film in close to 30 years.
All timer comedy.
P.S. 200th film watched with Morgan... woh... and woo!
A spritely comedy of con-artists, Frank Oz's "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" is a lively and amusing film that succeeds on the strength of its leading men. Following the Steve Martin and Michael Caine as confidence men charming and grifting their ways through the French Riviera, Oz's film is sunny, silly, and a tremendous amount of fun.
Focusing on two rival cons with their eyes on the same woman and her $50,000, the film revolves around the efforts of the two to woo her while relieving her of a small fortune. Martin and Caine spar comedically as each reaches into his metaphoric bag of lightly nefarious resources to beat the other. It is a breezy, light piece of comic mayhem.
Oz takes…
God, Glenne Headly is ELECTRIC and I will always have a crush on her!!!!! Her last line, compliments to the CHEF
Laughed and laughed.
My Mom got this movie from Mcdonalds when I was little, I can't even count how many times I've seen it. We watched it near constantly, and somehow it seems to get better with age (like Michael Caine's wine collection). I love Caine in this David Niven role, chameleon-like quality that adds something to the con-artist motif.
Steve Martin hits some kind of 80's comedy fever pitch with Ruprecht, honestly.
But Glenne Headly takes us there. <3 The American Soap Queen <3 I'm totally bewitched by Janet Colgate every time. She has this dazzling Susan Sarandon quality that gets 2 me.
Yet another way Mcdonalds has left me satisfied.
