Easily the silliest movie that has almost brought me to tears. A fun, easygoing movie about what even the most ridiculous films can mean to people. The Disaster Artist found dead in a ditch.
One of the most enjoyable films of the year. Dolemite is my Name fills it’s runtime with as much energy as it can, even moments that need a minute to catch their breath feel like they have something exciting to offer. I don’t think I’m the one that needs to tell you this but Eddie Murphy delivers a performance that never loses your interest. The cameos, the music, the energy of it all, sure it might not be saying a whole lot but it’s hard not to have a great time watching this.
Murphy and Snipes are great. Lots of LOL moments and the premiere scene was moving for me. I'm a big fan of the original films so this was especially fun for me as a genre film geek. But being close to the originals also made it harder for me to accept the many artistic liberties taken. Although the film is about the making of Dolemite (1975), most of the iconic scenes that we see being shot in the film are from the two sequels... The Human Tornado (1976) and Disco Godfather (1979). But I don't think writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski ever intended for this to be a 100% accurate bio pic... like their other works Ed Wood, The People vs. Larry Flynt, etc.... these films are more about the passion and triumphs of their subjects than historical accuracy.
Watched on Netflix.

"I'm so grateful for what you did for me, cause I'd never seen nobody that looks like me up there on that big screen."
A film about visibility and creativity, about being up on the silver screen for the sake of being known and understood. One of the funniest movies in a long time, and oh so joyous.
It’s safe to assume that Eddie Murphy has always worshipped at the altar of “Dolemite” mastermind Rudy Ray Moore, as the lewd, brash, and infectiously self-possessed blaxploitation icon blazed the trail that Murphy later followed to his own fame. At the very least, Moore’s foul-mouthed comedy records (e.g. “Eat Out More Often”) and his total disregard for white audiences helped light the way forward. But Murphy, who was a Hollywood-minted star by the time he was 25, probably never thought he would relate to Moore’s hardscrabble career quite as much as he has in recent years. Once you get paid $15 million to star in “Beverly Hills Cop III,” you can only have so much in common with a pioneer…
The writers of the wonderful Ed Wood make a welcome return to their winning formula of a director using his infinite ambition and limited talent to convince everyone around him to help make his dream of making a movie a reality. Dolemite Is My Name isn’t as poignant as Ed Wood — Rudy Ray Moore’s story was a lot happier than Ed Wood’s, and he didn’t work with a dying Bela Lugosi on top of that — but it’s got way more big laughs, with a terrific Eddie Murphy performance at its center, and a hilarious Wesley Snipes in a key supporting role. While I’m sure this is better in a theater, DIMN a perfect Netflix movie: Not too taxing, endearingly sweet, consistently funny, and extremely rewatchable.
An absolute blast. I had inexplicably never heard of Rudy Ray Moore or Dolemite before watching this, but I kinda want to check out everything he's ever done now. This movie is just a burst of fun and energy anchored by great performances all around, with Eddie Murphy stealing the show in every scene. Plus, as an Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt fan, Titus Burgess is always a plus.
I got tons of Disaster Artist vibes from this, but I think this film handles the whole "movie about making another wacky movie" thing way better. It's not especially deep, but it's a feel-good ride that's sure to inspire the artist in all of us.
(Side note, on the Wikipedia page for this movie, they use a picture of Eddie Murphy from the Shrek Forever After premiere and that made me happy)
“The truth is, ain't nobody been on a movie set before, so we don't know all that technical stuff like lights and sound and camera.”
For whatever reason, I think this film will end up being more popular than Mr. Church. Eddie Murphy and pals star in Dolemite Is My Name, the true story of Rudy Ray Moore, a man who was going nowhere fast until he pursued his dream of making a movie. Da'Vine Joy Randolph is outstanding in her performance as singer/actress Lady Reed.
Don't miss it, but also don't watch it with your grandma.
