Without knowledge of the politics between Brazil and Paraguay, I was afraid the film would be a mess, but it IS NOT. Don't Swallow My Heart... is a love story. A goofy, lovesick boy has fallen for an older girl from the other side of the river. As violently as she rebuffs him, he cannot stop thinking about her.
There is an additional story with the boy's older brother and his biker gang. Drama, violence, love, brotherhood. The boy's family is teetering on the edge of a complete break down.
The film never gets overly sentimental.
What do you do when your feelings overwhelm you despite: the disinterest of the object of your affection; the physical barriers; the cultural and family differences; and the complete hopelessness of the situation?
All that being said, the film may be a bit clunky for some. There are a few slow and distracted sections in the middle as well.
