A POV documentary following filmmaker Teresa Alfeld's journey uncovering the story of her childhood best friend's dad, Doug Bennett, leader of the legendary 1980s Canadian party band Doug and the Slugs.
this doc about Doug and the Slugs' biggest strength is the access to all of Doug's old journals and getting that insight into his mind years later by way of those who were around them reading the entries for the first time. not sure where I land about the director constructing the movie around their childhood relationship with Doug's daughter but I'm just happy there's a doc about the band anyway.
I did not like the filmmaker's choice to frame this documentary around the fizzling of her childhood friendship with Doug Bennett's daughter. Especially now, as a adult, grasping that alcoholism and the dissolution of a marriage were at play. So, I dunno - I think I'll hold off from giving this a rating just yet.
ANYWAY, obviously, I can't hear "Too Bad" and not think of Norm Macdonald. Always puts me in a good mood, so here you go - enjoy!
