30 MIN IN: Hey, conceptually, this is pretty good! Seems like a broad take on a smart sci-fi satire idea, but still not sure why people hate this!
60 MIN IN: ... oh
120 MIN IN: ......................................... oh.
Hi, my name is Griffin Newman and I like the movie DOWNSIZING. By the time you are reading this I am probably dead, having been brutally murdered by the entirety of Film Twitter.
I usually avoid watching screeners but I made the poor decision to watch this film on a DVD screener. It was a mistake. Alexander Payne always makes great films. Even his worst films are better than most. So I'm a moron for not seeing this on the big screen. One of my faves of the year.
in this movie people go from BIG to ˢᵐᵃˡˡ and incidentally this movie also goes from GOOD AND INTERESTING to ᵖʳᵉᵗᵗʸ ᵇᵃᵈ
a concept that would have been much better in the hands of yorgos lanthimos or even someone like charlie mcdowell. i was pretty intrigued while i was watching it, but it left a bad taste in my mouth afterwards. my original review was just gonna be “???” which pretty much sums it up
Downsizing was released in 2004, nominated for 6 Oscars, including best Adapted screenplay, best picture, and best director. The screenplay won the first round of the Blacklist survey for unproduced scripts. The project was picked up originally by Ron Howard and was then around until 20th Century Fox finally began production. David O. Russell, Ridley Scott, and Spike Jonze were all at some point set to direct, and Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson, George Clooney, and Kate Winslet were all at one point attached. The name was changed post-Cannes premiere, where it was widely acclaimed, despite failing to win the Palme. Charlie Kaufman reportedly did rewrites after test audiences found the ending too bitter, but these suggestions were thrown out. Starring…
i was just starting to jot down some thoughts about this half-baked movie when i saw that don hertzfeldt released another still from WORLD OF TOMORROW: EPISODE 2 and i forgot that Downsizing ever happened.
except for Udo Kier. nobody forgets Udo Kier. he rules in this harder than he's ruled in a long time.
What a colossal mess. Spends over an hour on intriguing worldbuilding and exposition only to throw it all away in the 2nd and 3rd acts for several pointless tangents that don’t utilize the premise at all. The theme constantly contradicts itself, Matt Damon is flatter than he’s ever been before, and none of the characters have enough desire or drive to invest the audience in any way. Feels like 5 different movies all masquerading as one lazy piece of “satire” and each taking themselves FAR too seriously.
The only saving grace is the absolutely delightful Hong Chau. Definitely deserves a Best Supporting Actress nom come January.
If you think it's hilariously funny and never gets old when immmigrants speak in broken English then definitely go see this.
I can't believe I wasted over 2 hours watching this movie knowing damn well I don't like Matt Damon (Dogma is an exception because it is brilliant)
its been a while since ive seen movies with a unique concept that, at the same time try to serve a critique about the environment and class struggle while at the same time HOLY SHIT THEYRE SMALL
Saw it a few years ago and the only good thing I can say about it is that I have remembered it. Granted I’ve remembered it as the most boring movie I’ve ever seen, but I’m sure that counts for something.
Elysium, is that you in disguise?
No seriously, I love Matt Damon but he needs to stop taking up such roles now. Hong Chau’s character to me was as irritating (p.s. no, not because of her accent) as the many sloppily overlapping storylines. The whole narrative of the movie ends by the 20th-something minute, after which it was just “Oh?...Oh.....Uhhhh” for me.
Triste y decepcionante:(
I LOVED the descendants and unfortunately never got around to seeing Nebraska, Ben Murray, I'm sorry!
It's definitely next, somewhere on watchlist!
Okay, damn.
Damon is amazing as always. And every actor really has fun in this one. The middle has some great dialogue, but unfortunately suffers from maybe 20% too much stereotype? People are suffering but are the helpless? Interesting questions this film raises, all while trying to be light hearted. I really thought it was Hanke meets Kaufman (mainly, Synecdoche, NY, a pessimists movie).
This is the optimists movie to balance Kauffman.
Thanks Payne!
Matt Damon has a thing for movies with potential. this movie had a really cool concept, but it’s execution just fell flat.
