I was tempted to describe Drinking Buddies with labels such as "indie rom com" or "mainstream-ish mumblecore," but I think comparisons to other films in those categories does this delightful film a disservice. I should mention that I was probably hard-wired to enjoy this film given that it features an appealing cast starring some of my faves: Jake Johnson, Anna Kendrick, and Olivia Wilde. Beyond that, the improvised dialogue can be distracting, but the uncontrollable squirming it produces made watching this film an extremely visceral and physical experience. Also, it's just really fun to watch pretty people get tipsy and flirt.

Laughs and cries, and an endless torrent of authentic human emotion. This is as golden as the lager they are pounding down by the pint.
Jake Johnson is the best. Also why is he clean shaven on the poster when he has a full beard for the entire film?

Alright so admittedly Drinking Buddies wasn't my first taste of mumblecore, but it WAS my introduction to director/writer/editor/actor/soundman/journeyman/wizard Joe Swanberg's films.
Joe has one of those "I've seen him from somewhere" faces (You're Next)but he's most known for his 'behind the camera' work in the aforementioned growing genre (i thought it was a joke when I first heard its name) of "mumblecore." Its a genre that focuses on intricate humanistic characters but little plot, or budget. If you have to think to yourself "wait, now I think I HAVE seen a mumblecore film" well, you probably haven't.
But that's what me, and Drinking Buddies are here for.

Deftly tip-toeing around all the generic rom-com-drama pitfalls, this largely improvised film feels sincere and natural, but, in the end, rather insubstantial.
Writer and director Swanberg keeps it very intimate and natural, playing to the strengths of the cast. Of that cast Johnson and Wilde are superb. There is this thing that happens when you're watching great performances and is that you forget the actors are acting. Usually great acting is attributed to displaying a variety of emotions as convincingly as possible, giving life to characters. That's probably true, but keeping it real and essentially 'being' on screen is far more difficult. And that is something Wilde and Johnson manage to achieve here. They are simply a delight to watch,…
