Honestly, I don't know why this movie is generally considered bad. It's genuinely one of my favorite movies of all time.
The acting? Absolutely steller. Rik Mayall is obviously the standout, and I can't praise him in a way that hasn't already been done, but Phoebe Cates as Lizzie, a survivor of gastlighting and emotional/verbal abuse? Marsha Mason as the cold, un-motherly mother that is all too realistic? Ashley Peldon as Young Lizzie, who lashes out with ridiculous stunts because she doesn't know how else to express her emotions? And everyone else having to pretend like Mayall's not standing over them, screaming and making fake puke noises? Unparalleled, unforgettable performances, all delivered perfectly.
The story? Touching and bittersweet. The friendship…
