“we can do it. we can fucking skip time”
i started to get scared when the reviews for this began to trickle in, but i have to admit that i was completely captivated by it, and not in a sense that i think it’s profound or that i’m seeing something that people are missing, but the fucking honestly of it... not everyone is gonna enjoy that or be entertained by that, but it’s fascinating to me here: time compacted, emotions strained to the breaking point. years worth of interactions sped up and processed and cherished and discarded like rotten fruit. and most of all, the two extremely dedicated and sincere performances make this what it is, whatever that may be
this is a really peculiar movie, but it really worked for me. also, there’s something really satisfying about seeing two women, wrapped up in each other’s arms, screaming at the moon in the middle of the night
oh wow the simultaneous existential fear and passionate obsession with emotional intimacy
“i’ve already started writing a song about us. - it’s about you and me falling in love for the first time. but, like, we have invented falling in love. you know? we invented it and then the rest just copy us. like doing covers of our falling in love”
time is fake and i’m so fucking sad
“because it hurts! because it hurts so much! that’s why i know, it’s fucking real, ok?”
intimacy is so TERRIFYING.... to be your own person from birth that breathes and sleeps and thinks and then to willingly share yourself with someone else and give them a part of you, if not all of you: not just close in proximity physically but in every cell of you and every thought and to attain that closeness seems almost impossible... none of this is coherent! all i know is that i’ve been crying for an hour and this movie Does something to me
This film is so intimate and emotionally honest that I felt like I just lived out an entire relationship within 24 hours.
Some tidbits from the Q&A with Alia Shawkat, Miguel Artera, and Hillary Spera following this Tribeca screening:
- The 24 hour section was filmed start to finish in 24 hours (they switched most of the crew halfway through but a lot filmed for 27 hours)
- All of the dialogue was improvised, following a detailed outline
- They originally wrote this to be a relationship between a man and a woman but couldn’t find a man who would do it for 24 hours BECAUSE MEN AIN’T SHIT. This was SO surprising to me because what struck me the…
Kind of feels like what staying up all night is really like -- fun and exciting for a time, and then just disorienting and kind of sad. Duck Butter had a premise that I couldn't resist seeing explored, and it's handled pretty well. Strong lead performances carry us through this wild, sexually-charged, 24-hour period of two women who've just met. Quite honestly, it was exciting just to see so many explicitly lesbian or bi characters in one movie. The dynamic between the central couple is fascinating, creating a space for thematic exploration of issues I've never seen in gay cinema. Intimacy is something so many of us struggle with, regardless of sexuality, but the specifity here is what makes this work.…
all existential and intimacy crisis aside, alia shawkat's life in this film is....So Ideal??? sis can drive, has a car, a dope house to herself, pretty cool job and is out every night livin her best gay life and to top it all off straight up adopts a dog? When will I too live like this?? also alia will u pls be my wife??
this was good for like the first 30 mins but then it became kind of insufferable, i just couldn’t bring myself to care about any of the characters. it’s an interesting concept that was treated with honesty but i feel it could have been executed better
this film is just dramatic on a whole other level.not only that they are also actually insane . i skipped most of this film but yea it’s not good so uh yea
I have met few people that call their parents by their first names but goddamn they are all insane
Really thought I was gonna love this and I did for a little bit but then also I didn’t
i love be gay
so simple, honest, and captivating in a very comfortable way, i think. this didn’t always work for me, but i think that’s the point? both performances here really blew me away, and the dialogue felt so natural that i forgot this is an actual film several times. i really liked this!
Um filme bom pra refletir sobre relacionamentos e pessoas. Não cheguei a criar expectativa, mas fiquei bem satisfeita. Quase saciada assim.
The fear of intimacy is really shattering and I think this film encapsulated it well without being pretentious or seeking to be overly profound. I like that it was raw and honest. I didn’t really enjoy myself watching but i could empathise and I felt personally spoken to in a way.
