Watch out for exploding ninjas, fool!
Ching Siu-Tung's first film is absolutely fantastic. The awesome, the stupid, the human, the impossible, the surreal, the contemplative, the bombastic, and the cinematic are all strong with this one.
How something can be so over the top absurd, so uprooted from reality, and still be the most nuanced Hong Kong take on Sino-Nippon relations that I've seen so far is beyond me.
The description says this is one of the last of the old school wuxia, but it feels more like the birth of a new school of 80's excess and attitude merged with the fading traditions of classical Peking Opera cinema. Just an outstanding good time.
Shoutout to that sweet 80's synth soundtrack!
