most problems in my life would disappear if i could be as outspoken and unabashed as Sandhya
Prem is really unlikable until the last 5 minutes of the film... which are actually very cute.
sandhya: smart, beautiful, sense of humor, witty, strong, sense of self
prem: prakash
anyway the song at the end was really cute and 90’s reminiscent but damn prem is such a useless hag for most of this ... sandhya you deserve better!!
Absolutely entertaining trope fueller of a film that gave one of the earliest small town upper caste family lives and misdemeanors story to the industry to make cinema with and Bollywood hasn't shut the fuck up since then. So much that even this film feels tiring when you get busy with the antics and everyday screw ups of this oddball of a family. Lower middle class has to be oddball where everyone pukes kamedy out of every hole they possess. And ofc, everyone is frustrated.
But I have to accomodate the film with a greater admiration because when it came out, it wasn't a run of the mill thing.
Dum Laga Ke Haisha has aged. And it'll continue to age until it rots but it remains enjoyable to a great extent.
Ayo this made me wanna hit my head on the wall for 3/4 of the movie, and hold hands with someone I love for 1/4 of the movie
Family is beautiful: Although the theme of the movie is that, love is more than physical appearances, it’s the depiction of typical desi middle class family that stands out for me. The family scenes are memorable, even now. Bhumi Pednekar gives a strong performance. The dialogues are authentic with the dialect and everything. Wrapped in a Bollywood masala cover, this is a movie with a giant heart. And of course, Kumar Sanu, a voice memorable for every 90’s kid. Truth be told I enjoyed this family entertainer more than I thought I would.
Ok, fine, the end was cute. BUT the entirety of the movie I couldn't stop thinking about how much of a whiny bitch that husband was. His wife is beautiful, and he's pissed off because she's not a size 0. I can literally not find enough energy to care about him whatsoever.
Too underdeveloped to strike as keenly as it might. There’s certainly potential to be mined from dramatic conflict giving way to happier, feel-good vibes but Ayushmann Khurrana’s Prem is far too immature to properly feel sympathy with, behaving more like a petted-lipped toddler than a late-20-something, albeit one whose prospects have been curtailed by a browbeating father.
Bhumi Pednekar’s Sandhya is much easier to get on board with, which is hardly surprising since she does nothing wrong and yet has to bear endless brickbats about her larger-than-average size (not to mention her academic merits). Quite rightly, she stands her ground while making some ‘necessary’ matrimonial placations.
Unfortunately, the showpiece ‘wife-carrying contest’ is unconvincingly staged, designed for maximum punch-the-air impact, and as a lazy narrative palliative for a couple trammelled into an arranged marriage.
Kalau Aach Aku Jatuh Cinta beda sih, bisnis…
The Chicago South Asian Film Festival presented it on the big screen immediately after DDLJ! At the last minute, I decided to buy a ticket and watch it. Some of the biggest laughs in the audience were when Prem and Sandhya were battling with different songs on tapes. I wish I knew what those old songs were because the lines chosen were obviously hilarious to Hindi speakers.
Funny thing was that when I was buying the ticket from the festival staff, the woman helping me said, "I think this one is supposed to be pretty funny." I replied, "It is! I own it on DVD." She was amazed. Had no idea it was out on disc already, and I had to spell out Induna.com to her when I told her I had ordered if from India. Too funny.
