A Filipino-American man hires a translator to help translate a letter he wrote for the woman that broke his heart.
2014 Directed by Dan Villegas
A Filipino-American man hires a translator to help translate a letter he wrote for the woman that broke his heart.
At least one can learn a little Tagalog while being mildly amused by this stupid perception of a story.
It's a great feel-good film, the kind that makes you leave the cinema smiling. I love the lines, and how it's done is very Filipino. Very bakla, this movie.
Light, fluffy, cute movie about two tangas falling in love <3 I now have the energy to go through these last 8 weeks of hell yay
A rare treat from the Metro Manila Film Festival entries that were mostly sequels (and cash grabs). Knowing the culture is a guide to effectively translate your message.
Jennilyn Mercado is the MVP of this endeavor. The film works best when it lets the characters be funny, instead of forcing them through the stereotypical motions of a romantic comedy. The ending needed a lighter footprint, but it didn't negate the my lols from the first hour.
Nothing makes sense here. Or to make an argument, it degrades the portrayal of Filipinos as generic cliches. She's a competent tutor, but let's make her someone who views culture as exotic. He's American but let's make him quick-witted he goes on to understand fully the heroine's plight and rants, all of which are in Filipino terms she didn't even use in their whole time together. And oh, he's a stalker, too, which is charming according to the screenwriter. Kudos. F
It's my first time to finally decide to participate as an audience for the Philippine Metro Manila Film Festival. In all honesty, there were only three entries that I wanted to watch: Kubot by Erik Mati, his sequel to TikTik: The Aswang Chronicles; English Only, Please by Dan Villegas; and Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo.
Anyway, I watched Bonifacio and it was okay. Love the cinematography, but the acting was blah. Now, I haven't seen Kubot since the cinemas already changed scheds, so all I have left to watch is English Only, Please.
Ever since I saw the trailer, I was hyped to know that there is still hope for Filipino RomCom. So when I was the cinema and the film…
The decision to have a month long binge of Filipino movies was regretful. This fare is not for me.
For a mainstream Filipino movie, this is definitely worth watching. I like how this movie manages to deliver punchlines without forcing it and the fact that they managed to use product placement in this movie in the most subtle way possible.
If I’d seen this back in 2014 I would have probably liked it more? Not saying it didn’t sit well with me right but it’s 55-45 charming and cringey. Jennylyn Mercado has always been effective. Wanna see her in more comedies. Lots of comedy gold here but also I’m giving a hard pass on some parts.
dan villegas is my favorite mainstream cinema director, he's a game changer in the local movie scene
Jennylyn Mercado stars and shines as a bubbly English tutor with a "foolish heart" who helps an expat, played by Derek Ramsay, translate his brokenhearted bitterness into his ex-girlfriend's native tongue. This romantic comedy refreshingly (and successfully) integrates the most pedestrian details about the Filipino culture (such as a nod to a Roselle Nava hit), thereby augmenting what the audience understands about the characters, and what they can easily identify to, especially in the matters of the heart. For a movie that is all about the lexical configurations of what we make sense out of love, it does not mince its words; yet the audience manages to fill more into what the film does not say, judging from the collective reactions in the theater---a commendable proof that nothing (whether in English, Filipino, Korean, or even German) got lost in translation.
