The Eva Rebuilds are pointless. They are the end product of the banal hyperfixation that all major media franchises will eventually suffer, the most extreme, self-aggrandizing, and utterly worthless endeavor that any filmmaker at Anno's caliber has ever undergone.
These movies are primarily stories about Evangelion itself, about the iconography of the series and about the meaning that is constructed from the narrative building blocks that have been created - but that alone cannot justify their existence. Evangelion is self-reflexive to it's core, and it always has been.

How will a franchise end that's been ongoing for so many years? That was the question I had when I watched Evangelion 3.0+1.0.
I've been satisfied with how Evangelion ended. Such as the final 2 episodes of the series ending off with Shinji accepting himself, and Shinji realizing how life is going to be painful and how he'll have to live through it in End of Evangelion.
This time in 3.0+1.0, Shinji finds closure for himself and others.
The entirety of 3.0+1.0 feels... conclusive, even though it's Anno's final work for Evangelion. While 3.33 did have stuff unanswered, 3.0+1.0 does a great job answering resolving the problems. The characters were one thing that left me surprised, especially one character since…

Anno said please for the love of god forget about my work and go outside for once, I hear you, with anno sensei's help we can finally move on. The final film revolves around rei's farming arc and its beautiful, splendid, magnificent, abstract, human, thoughtful, life changing stuff, there's also some subplots about 'the bible' too but who cares, Rei (original batch, unit 006) finally learned what a bath is, this is the conclusion we've waited nearly a decade for. Teared up during the final moments, as if watching an artist finally completing his work and then erasing it in real time, like a monk wiping away intricate mandalas in one confident stroke to teach a lesson or two about impermanence, it's bittersweet, but no use holding on, you can't stay here forever, stand up, applaud, leave with a smile, oyasumi, ohayou, arigatou, sayonara.
I'm overwhelmed.
Evangelion has been absorbed into the popular consciousness of Japan. Everyone knows its characters, story beats, songs. It has, as is the fate of so much art in capitalist society, become victim to endless marketing and promotion. Look at the characters sell glasses or a meal; get a weather update app dressed up like Nerv. But does it matter when it has helped and saved so many people (myself included)? And what does that make us, if we treat these characters as real, if the franchise has permeated our lives so deeply? What does that make Evangelion?
