“You betrayed me. You will die in that room tonight.”
It’s been a while since I’ve given a film a half star rating because I usually find some positive thing to say, but Joe Lynch’s latest movie has broken the streak. I didn’t find one redeemable quality in Everly and it’s going to be very hard for me to find another film that I could despise as much as this one. The violence in this film is disturbing and gratuitous. The screenplay, which I’m surprised to hear was in the 2010 Blacklist for most liked unmade script, is insane. The story centers on Salma Hayek’s character, Everly, who from the opening scene of the movie is facing off gangsters and…
First great grindhouse motherfucker of the year. Salma is terrible but at the same time gives herself over to the role admirably. Salma has a price on her head and she shoots it out with Yakuza fuckers and high priced hookers. Joe Lynch's intense direction and energy is pure adrenaline. I think it's his best film to date. It's one of those one location action films that it's never boring and keeps surprising us as it heads down to a balls to the wall action finale. Some standout scenes involving an elevator and grotesque scenes of wild action with dark humor. For sonsofbitches lovers of genre shit only. Oh, and there's a nod to Riki-Oh!
I'm not usually into films that is just action from start to finish, but I had great fun with this, squish, bang, knife, splat. Loved the Christmas Carols over the initial carnage, ha!
Any movie that features Salma Hayek uttering the line "Tell him he can lick my balls" is a winner in my book.
Virtually plotless and set largely in a single room/apartment, Everly is a hardcore violent action film stripped down to its skeletal frame......which essentially equates to Salma Hayek versus an endless array of thugs, hoods, hitmen, torturers, gangsters and (soon to be) "dead whores".
Owing a massive debt to hard-hitting Asian cinema, this has the style and sadism of films like Oldboy and Ichi The Killer, with boundary-pushing brutality by the bloody bucketload. It can also be added to that expanding list of non-traditional, not exactly festive Christmas movies.
A post Tarantino/Rodriguez grindhouse camp effort that is slickly enjoyable for a late night watch. The little girl playing Salma's daughter was cute without being annoying or unconvincing. Hayek herself still has a fetching body and her curves should be considered lethal weapons. She might have managed a minor action career if she'd chosen to fully embrace that path twenty years ago.
Such a fun action flick. It's mainly contained to one apartment, but it keeps the action flowing with some nasty kills. It builds in some truly insane characters as it goes and it all adds to the over the top nature of the entire film. It can be funny at times, bloody as hell, and even emotional in places. It's a simple, entertaining premise and Joe Lynch knew how to have fun with it.
Imprisoned yakuza sex slave Salma Hayek has had enough and decides to break free, by taking down everyone who tries to come after her.
Watched it as I wanted to see what Joe Lynch would do with a simple premise in a single apartment location. He goes the bloody route with quite a few creative kills and a hint of gore. Was fun to watch Hayek take everyone down, but by the third act I really just wanted it over, as it felt like it was never gonna end.
Basically, once her boss learns of her insubordination, he puts a large bounty on her head, luring everyone with a weapon and half a brain cell to her location. Then it's…
Salma Hayek plays Everly, a woman trapped in her own apartment while she is hunted by a horde of different assassins and armed people .. And that's about it! We are told why she is the target of so many but in a film with so much gun play, violent scenes and parts where it feels ripped from a video game none of it really matters! Don't watch such a film expecting too much of a plot .. Better to just turn your brain off and enjoy the body count.
The screen is black, incomprehensible screams are heard. The blackness fades and we see a visibly shaken, nude Salma Hayek enter a bathroom with a black and white checkered floor. Everly (Salma Hayek) stumbles to retrieve a gun from behind the toilet. Everly, still physically shaken holds the gun to her head with the barrel covered by her black mane. A short moment later a gunshot is heard and we see Everly victoriously walk out of the bathroom and a man shot dead in her apartment. This is the first few moments of EVERLY.
I really love this movie. It plays out like a video game, random assasisns from all walks of life come to kill Everly. Do they succeed?…
Salma Hayek kills a whole lot of motherfuckers. Not as much fun as it sounds.
Okay this definitely going on my Christmas movies list. It’s pretty much non stop over the top action from start to finish, and I loved it.
Salma Hayek stars as Everly, a woman who has betrayed a Japanese mob boss and now must escape an onslaught of assassins and leave her apartment cell in order to provide money to her mother and daughter who need to go on the run. Pretty good pacing here and there's action throughout which is really enjoyable.
Also, Dead Man would be fun at parties.
I love where this goes, wish we saw more of the insane characters earlier in the flick, props to Joe Lynch
The scene where the dying Japanese business man sings Itsy-Bitsy Spider to the 6 year old was inspired.
Salma Hayek is amazing as always and carries this mess. Some directors could skillfully balance the various tones, from super dark to cartoony, but Joe Lynch is not that director. In theory this should be way more fun than in practice.
Not even my infatuation with Salma Hayek could save this one. Salma Beautiful, Movie bad.
I think my problem with this one is that the framing story is too dark to be fun. The stakes were too high for me to enjoy, specifically regarding what was said would happen to the little girl. 😬 Not cool. If it had just been Salma's character trying to survive or something that would have probably landed a lot better for me I think. Even if they just had said they'd kill the little girl that might have been better. Overall I think the serious parts were just too serious and I couldn't quite swing back to "fun" after them. The tonal shifts just didn't work for me. If it went dark and serious and stayed there, that would…
