I wish there was a 6-hour cut of this movie. Or longer. I just wish it never ended.
this movie is a goddamn delight. 2016's MAGIC MIKE XXL (though with broader appeal, i'd imagine. and fewer man-thongs… but not *many* fewer man-thongs). plotlessness is the new plot. get the fuck right on out of here with that conflict, ya hear?
MVP = a tough call, but Glen Powell with the walk-off win.
peak Linklater continues apace. now that's what i'm talking about.
p.s. Bernie Tiede crushing it as the production's hired Cat Wrangler. wrangled the shit out of those cats.
Stand By Me, Dazed and Confused, and Everybody Wants Some is the greatest trilogy of all-time. It might not be an official trilogy, but in my eyes it is. We look into the lives of middle schoolers, high schoolers, and college students. Also known as the 3 main stages of a young person's life and each film is done brilliantly. You could even substitute School of Rock for Stand By Me to make it a Linklater trilogy.
Everybody Wants Some is a complete and utter joy. A film so full of life and spirit. A party movie with a message. I never wanted this film to end. All of the characters are absolutely fantastic. Everyone gets their moment to shine.…
For the record: because this movie is still being discussed, and I think it's best to restore some sanity to modern film dialogue despite not being too fond of this movie, I believe Everybody Wants Some and the filmmakers shouldn't be so quickly labeled "sexist, racist, transphobic, homophobic", whatever buzzword the radical critics come up with now. At least not without some discussion first.
Calling the film sexist, by definition, implies there's a malice towards a supposed lesser sex, which Everybody Wants Some, the filmmakers and cast never make the case for. There's no power position hierarchy between the sexes in the film. The guys roll around in mud fights just as much as the girls do. Both girls and…
In almost every comedic movie I've ever seen, no matter how funny the overall film is, there's going to be moments of drama. It seems all comedic writers need to channel their inner Billy Shakespeare. What I adore about Richard Linklater's Everybody Wants Some is the closest we get to drama is the comment made by Jake, the character most of the movie is seen through, about Super Baseball Scout Pete Ward, not being real. The tension lasts for seconds, and that's it. The rest of the movie is simple lighthearted fun. Nothing more. Nothing less. Yes, the fellas want to hook up with the ladies. Yes, the fellas want to score more than homeruns. But, that's 1980's life for…
There wasn't a single minute of this film's runtime during which my emotional expression wasn't ranging from a light chuckle to hysterical laughter. Maybe my favorite comedy of the decade so far. The entire cast needs their own TV series.
I was compelled to watch this out of solidarity with a few users currently being harassed for their opinions on the film. I want to be part of this conversation not because I think this film is a particularly important one to discuss, but because I respect those who wrote those other reviews (I also respect many users who liked the film). I mention this because, since the bulk of this is going to be in response to responses, to be part of the conversation, I would like to anticipate some of the responses. Notably, the accusation that I went into this expecting to dislike it (or wanting to):
Of course I fucking did.
If you think that invalidates anything…
god i hated this really truly hated it and i don't want to talk about it bc i'll probably incite the rage of linklater fanboys but i do want to talk about why come i've heard the "word" "poon" in two separate movies from this current decade in the past 24 hours? do people still say this? i mean, people don't, but do straight men? do they still say this word to refer to vagina? do men in groups of their fellow men actually say to their fellow men that they wanna catch a piece of poon? it seems like a made up gross-out word but hearing it twice (well, like 400 times bc i think it's said at least…
My original review of this was very short because, although I enjoyed the film, I didn't think it warranted any kind of lengthy write-up. I still don't think it does, really, but based on everything that has been said about it over the past two months I just wanted to say a few words on how I viewed it.
I enjoyed the movie for what it was; a movie about college male baseball players in 1980. Period. Linklater WAS a male college baseball player in 1980 so, I'm guessing he based this movie (as he does a lot of his films) on his experience. I also asked my husband (who was around the same age as Linklater and grew up…
The unofficial official sequel to Dazed and Confused finds Jake, a college freshman baseball pitcher, spending the weekend before classes start, hanging out with his new teammates, and doing the things you would expect a college kid to do.
Dazed and Confused is comfort food to me. I've seen it more times than I can count, and it's not only my favorite Richard Linklater film, it's easily one of my favorite movies of all time. This isn't officially a Dazed sequel, but it sure feels like one. From the opening car tracking shot, to the music that fits 1980 to almost perfection, to the most awesome wardrobe and facial hair our characters wear, to the cool hangout spots, to the…
