"Extracted" is a solid, mind-bending indie thriller that unfolds like "Inception" meets "Strange Days" but packs a distinctive punch of its own. It is an effective piece of small-scale science fiction.
The story focuses on a man who has built a device that allows people to relive memories. When the device is modified so that people can experience the memories of others, its inventor becomes trapped in the mind of an alleged murderer. While his physical body languishes, he must find a way out of his host's subconscious. This set up is intriguing, and, though there are a few threads that do not quite connect, the narrative develops satisfyingly.
The production is solid, bearing the hallmarks of its independent pedigree. Performances are strong and elevate material that would have been undercut in less polished hands. The film, overall, is subtly stirring: "Extracted" is a worthy, twisty, and entertaining experience.
