  All cinephiles have their own personal tastes and personal preferences, and things they irrationally love no matter what. And here is one of mine: I do not think I am capable of giving a negative review to any movie that contains a good karaoke scene. And (spoiler alert) Fallen Leaves contains a really good karaoke scene.

  There’s something poetic about a filmmaker inclined towards repetition making the fourth part of a trilogy, and the ratio of familiarity to content in FALLEN LEAVES is pretty much 1:1 - Aki’s patented dry cocktail of anxiety, enervation and empathy goes down easy, albeit with a bit less bitterness in his old(ish) age. Never one to try to change the world, Kaurismaki instead remakes the same small corner of it in his image, and if there’s a certain timidity in that project, it’s commensurate with a winning lack of pretension; he's not oblique, or enigmatic, or even confrontational, and nor is he trying to subvert anything.   To judge by Aki Kaurismäki’s typically wry and winsome “Fallen Leaves,” the Finnish auteur’s first movie since threatening to retire after “The Other Side of Hope” came out 2017, only two things have any significant importance have happened in the world over the last six years.

  The first and most pressing of those is the war in Ukraine, which bleeds into Ansa’s (Alma Pöysti) already depressing kitchen every time the supermarket cashier dares to turn on her radio after work. Listening to news of the latest atrocity in Kiev is the only thing worse than eating her microwaved dinner in the complete silence Ansa settles for when she can’t find anything more comforting on the airwaves.   It is very comforting to know as the world turns to shit that we can still from time to time count on one of those Kaurismaki working class love stories. This one of his best, like a Borzage movie that happens to include a lot of laughs. That two people are supposed to be together is established by an exchange of gazes, the world will conspire to keep them separated by ways cosmical and practical, but auteurial hand if not God will intervene. Somehow the large obstacles go perfectly with Kaurismaki’s usual barebones approach and every small detail he decides to focus one is a winner. In the meantime until the couples reunion, there are lots of wonderful faces, karaoke and a great dog named Chaplin. The biggest movies help make life worth it we’ve get in a while.
