This was a decent mid-tier family drama. There were a few dull moments and a couple of dull patches but nothing too much one way or the other. The best I can say about this movie is that everything is serviceable.
One of those often rather convoluted melodramas Shimizu seems to have directed throughout the 30s in between his more free-wheeling, playful films. This time, the plot is just a bit too preposterous, although there are some very good scenes (especially interactions of several women trying to sort out their feelings). Also, Shimizu never misses a chance for a beautiful lateral tracking shot.
Standard melodrama which didn't have too much of what i look for in a story. The acting was nice, though, so it wasn't like it was a total drag. Definitely acceptable. Just not much I'll remember very long.
Any movie with Michiko Kuwano is at least worth the watch but I can't say I was interested in anything else about this, to be honest
