The first film by Kevin Reynolds and the only one remotely watchable. Waterworld was a notorious misfire of near epic proportions and the less said about the ugly Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, the better. He directed a handful of other movies, but hardly anybody remembers those.
I gave this one a shot because it’s supposed to be a more personal work and Quentin Tarantino likes it. Still I wasn‘t expecting a whole lot and sure enough what it delivered was even less.

Kevin Reynold's style resembles Michael Cimino's at times; grandiose, puzzling, and occasionally stunning. It's an Amblin Entertainment release that ambles down lonely roads and lost highways. A hazy, dreamy little film that doesn't quite come together...but that was probably intentional. Great soundtrack from the era of great soundtracks.
Encore Screening: 1985 was a disappointing year for me as an active and operating theater owner and film buyer. At two pre-release screenings I attended I witnessed two films on different occasions that I could not wait to exhibit. My spidey senses were tingling. Both features had “cult classic” aura all over them but sadly neither would see the projection light of day flicker them onto the silver screen.

I'm not sure the timeline on these things, because judging by the difference in their ages, my dad shoulda been out of college by the time my mom started (and he never finished, so... who knows?), but there's a small collection of stories I can cite bits and pieces of. A road movie set in '71. Five college friends head off towards Mexico to take their minds off their upcoming duty in Vietnam. It's honestly pretty great. Some moments hit you hard (like the "shootout" at the cemetery) but it also manages to make you laugh (the parachute training). Given its time, the soundtrack is also spiked with lots of memorable and carefully chosen tunes. I also loved the trippy flashbacks.
Lively post-college graduation road trip dramedy with a throbbingly bittersweet spine. It's a movie in search of genuine moments, not just regurgitated teen antics. Doesn't always succeed at that but definitely has a voice of its own, a restless energy, and a reflective streak, not to mention definitive proof that Kevin Costner deserved to become a star in the years to come (but also dismaying proof as to why Judd Nelson would not, despite this landing the same year as his one truly great performance in "The Breakfast Club". Sometimes it takes a John Hughes.). An unsung jewel from the coming-of-age set.

No doubt the Amblin production muscle helped, but debut writer/director Kevin Reynolds makes a strong showing in the technical aspects—there are a couple of really suspenseful sequences here, including an attempt to hook a car to a train and a skydiving accident. The issue is that the kinetic setpieces and louder performances (Judd Nelson, anyone?) clash with what is clearly intended to be a heartfelt farewell to youthful innocence, like if "American Graffiti" stopped the movie for Cessna stunts.
"Fandango" isn't quite as good as I'd hoped but strong chemistry between the leads and quite a solid amount of laughs make this a fun time. The cast have really good chemistry with each other with Kevin Costner and Judd Nelson being the standouts. There's not a whole lot wrong with this it just doesn't really try to be anything more than fine. A solid but slight watch.
I've had Fandango in my watchlist for a bit. I decided to watch it once I turned in my two weeks notice at Fandango after nearly 5 years of working there. I am grateful for being allowed to step outside of my hired role, flex my expertise, and create new video concepts for them that they had not done before.
