i had completely underestimated how critical the Rhapsody In Blue segment of this movie was to understanding who I was as a child (because I loved it)
The toy soldier segment kinda blew, as did some of the celebrity hosts, but hot damn the rest of this was incredible
rhapsody in blue is so strong that literally every other segment could suck and this would still be one of the greatest movies of all time
Everyone claims the first one is a masterpiece and the second one is a weaker version.
So going in I was nervous since I wasn't a big fan of the original... but guess what... it's the same fucking thing!
The first one is slightly better but if you like the first one and not the second... you like the nostalgia not the movie itself. I don't see the difference.
(Walt Disney Animated Series)
Disney pays tribute to their original masterpiece 'Fantasia', which perfectly fused classical music and animation, but this modern take is unfortunately a mixed bag quality wise.
"Walt Disney described the art of animation as a voyage of discovery, into the realms of color, sound, and motion."
It has been a couple years since I have seen 'Fantasia', and including the 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice' section from the original was great to see, but also really exposed how the pieces don't fully come together in this sequel. First off I love classical music, and all the selections made for this movie were amazing. My favorites songs would have to be 'Pines of Rome', 'Rhapsody in Blue', and 'The…
Though definitely not as powerful as its predecessor, Fantasia 2000 still boasts gorgeous animation. Rhapsody in Blue stands out, with colorful squiggles and doodles brought to life by Gershwin’s jazzy score. The Firebird takes second place, showcasing the beauty of nature magically. I also loved the short about the floating whales, more of them please :)
The rest of them kinda run together for me, and the use of TV styled transitions makes it all seem less thematic, and more like a television special. But still, most of this film is spellbinding and a reminder of how creative Disney once was. If it ever happens, I’ll come opening night for another Fantasia type project.
Barring the inclusion of "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," which, while a fantastic piece of animation and music, seems like a pointless insertion in this collection of new material, this is an ambitious and at times breathtaking set of sequences. With the use of spoken segues which interrupt the flow, the film seems unfortunately more like a badly stitched together anthology than a seamless feature, and the "Sorcerer's Apprentice" part doesn't help that. The new pieces, however, more than make up for this. From the more abstract Beethoven animation to the surreal Respighi, from the cool classic Gershwin to the stunning perfection of Stravinsky, the film manages to capture each piece in terms of tone and atmosphere--not necessarily finding animation to match…
Had to rewatch Fantasia 2000 right after I watched Fantasia. Such a cool expansion of the original Fantasia project.
Wish it was longer, Fantasia 2000 flies by. “Rhapsody in Blue” is hands down one of my favorite depictions of NYC in all of film. The conclusion with “Firebird Suite” is a) unreal in its beauty and b) such a fascinating parallel to Fantasia’s conclusion with “Night on Bald Mountain”. An almost otherworldly celebration of the progression of animation.
I adore it all so much.
The “Rhapsody in Blue” segment is one of the best Disney sequences ever, and several other pieces serve as worthy additions to the overall Fantasia project. This follow-up focuses far more on narrative and character than on the abstract artistry of its predecessor, which isn’t inherently a bad thing, but makes it look a lot safer by comparison. I wish each segment was twice as long, because the sheer length of the original Fantasia allowed for more creative embellishments that helped produce a hypnotic energy that this movie sadly lacks. The celebrity introductions are also a swing and a miss.
Still, I’m fully on board with the concept of animating classical music to create a new type of moviegoing experience — it’s undoubtedly the most artistically ambitious idea that Disney has ever pursued, and I’ll be first in line for any potential follow-up.
Like with the original, I love the first segments the most and then somewhat lose interest after The Sorcerer's Apprentice. Rhapsody in Blue just absolutely divine, though. Will return to this so often for that alone
For the 60th anniversary of the original Fantasia, it only seemed normal on Disney's part for them to produce a sequel. A pretty risky move, since Fantasia is a masterpiece that's hard to live up to. 2000 doesn't quite do it's excellent predecessor justice, but I'd still say it's a fine sequel in it's own right.
This one follows much the same format as the original, as the show is presented by a host on a glossier, more up-to-date musical stage. As opposed to just one, a variety of hosts are featured here, from Steve Martin to Quincy Jones, to even Penn & Teller. As with before, they each proudly present a series of animated musical segments, set to various classical…
The little girl in "Rhapsody in Blue" running into traffic to get her ball but it's me trying to get control of my life.
A true tour de force of animation and music as a form of physical storytelling and pure artistic expression, even if the celebrity speakers are annoying and slow the pacing.
Same tired framing process (see my comment on Fantasia), and Steve Martin shouldn't have been let anywhere near it.
rhapsody in blue and the firebird were very important to me as a child, glad i got to see them again :)
disney stop cranking out unnecessary subpar sequels and give us more fantasias challenge
8/10
Damn this is such a cool concept. It was really well done too.
Amazing animation that actually has interesting segment plots, some more than others.
It would have been much better without all the celebrity introductions though.
Very enjoyable. Would recommend.
While not having the sheer scope of the original, Fantasia 2000 still remains a worthy sequel, finally making good on Walt Disney's ambitious desire to see Fantasia turned into a sort of continually shifting piece of art, as nearly sixty years later, a sequel was finally made, and released to coincide with nothing less than the turn of the millennium.
More than anyone else, this film owes it's existence to Walt's nephew, Roy E. Disney, who for years fought and clawed to make sure that it would see completion, despite much opposition from the likes of Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg. Luckily, once Katzenberg, who was pissed that he didn't get promoted after his immediate superior died in a helicopter crash, defected…
I'm doing another mini ranking in the new segments with returning one excluded
#7: Piano Concerto No. 2: Pretty Lame And Didn't fit the music very well at all, no thanks.
#6: The Carnival of the Animals: Finale: Cute, Funny but aggressively Short
#5: Symphony No. 5: Have its moments of coolness but isn't as visually stimulated as it should be
#4: Pomp and Circumstance: Very Cute and Visually Interesting, though very Ludacris that Donald & Daisy didn't encounter each other the entire Ark Trip
#3: Pines of Rome: A dreamlike experience, good use of CG
#2: The Firebird: Close to be #1 but the climax pretty went too quickly and easily, otherwise, it's Flawless, one of the most breathtaking things Disney ever created, so magnificent on so many levels
#1: Rhapsody in Blue: Visually incredible, fits the music so well, has such a unique vibe, it needs to be seen to be believed
Every time I watch this I have a different favorite. High school it was probably Rhapsody in Blue. College it was definitely the Firebird. Now it's got to be the Shostakovich. It definitely helps that the Shosty isn't edited down like every other piece in this(and the original).
now the size of my heart is a flying whale~ the shark in my mind is no longer there~ 💫🎵
I enjoyed The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Noah’s Ark, but everything was good, except for most of the out of place celebrity intros.
Saw this in theaters as a kid.... remember liking it? Kind of a dud all around minus rhapsody in blue/stravinsky. Weird program choices (pomp and circumstance??) given they could have chosen literally any music and inconsistent animation styles between pieces. Feels disjointed and like it was made by a committee
