where's my tall, gentle sheep farmer who will quietly and lovingly support me through life and pick up after me when I inevitably make some stupid life choices
Carey Mulligan. cliffs. corsets. sheep. violins. fields. unrequited love. spite. puppies. mustaches? twists! yesssssss.
there's a really fun looseness to this, and a brevity (relative to the source material) that lets Vinterberg's Dogme leanings make some neat alchemy with the period piece trappings. and Mulligan is wonderful, you can feel the blood in her face.
Far From The Madding Crowd is a handsomely shot, elegant and engaging film. This your conventional period romance, that doesn't reinvent the genre, tho it is choppy/adrupt at places and it does feel rushed towards the third act, the movie would have benefitted from a longer runtime to flesh things out. What makes it work, for me, are some wonderful acting performances by Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts and especially Michael Sheen. Sheen's performance is the best thing in this movie, extremely graceful and tragic at the same time. Surprised that he didn’t get more awards heat, honestly.
I want Carey Mulligan's ability to flirt with three men just once and they all start proposing to her the next day.
not to miss the point of carey’s character, but if matthias schoenaerts asked for my hand in marriage i’d simply say yes, i don’t care how much i value my own independence

Thomas Vinterberg decided to follow up his critically acclaimed 2012 film, The Hunt, with this adaptation of Thomas Hardy's classic novel set in Victorian England. It was a sharp change of direction for Vinterberg considering what a great small crafted character study The Hunt was. Far From the Madding Crowd is more focused on the narrative and therefor the characters aren't explored as well, but the romantic story is still quite engaging.
