  Early work before Fatty partnered with Buster has a few cute bits of hat juggling, flapjack flippery, and high-wire work, but it's mostly characters gawking at the camera and a jealous husband shooting off an unlikely number of bullets.

  One of Arbuckle's better pre-Keaton comedies, thanks largely to a rousing finale in which he balances on telephone wires as a jealous husband takes potshots at him. Has more of a plot than many of his films from this era, even if it is a fairly standard one.

  2019 Weekly Comedy Challenge: 3/52 - (Week 3: A silent comedy that doesn't star Chaplin, Keaton, or Lloyd.)

  Since this was only 27 minutes long, I'm not actually logging it in my film diary. My film diary is for feature length movies since my friends and I stat track our movie watching.

  Nevertheless, Fatty's Tintype Tangle is another fun and energetic silent film. This was my introduction to Fatty Arbuckle and it didn't disappoint. His energy and physical prowess is really impressive. I love the casual way he flips the pancake or kicks his hat. It's so calm but there's such a level of talent there that makes it really stand out.

  The lengthy fight/chase scene was wonderfully choreographed and more elaborate than I expected. The way Arbuckle runs in place on a slick bathroom floor is quick and remarkable.

  I'm continually impressed by the art of silent film comedy.

  Probably the most satisfying Arbuckle I have yet seen, with nicely cascading anarchic silliness. And what is it with Arbuckle and handguns? It's like Chaplin and waiters.

  My second Fatty Arbuckle film after The Cook, and this one doesn't have Buster Keaton to hold my attention.

  And again, I just don't find him funny.

  Part of my effort to watch at least one short film per day. Here is the list I am currently working through, with a random number generator determining the film each day. I will take recommendations for everything that's 40 minutes max.

  Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle was one of the biggest stars in Hollywood in the Silent Era. But despite being so big and actually being one of the highest paid at the time, his legacy was tarnished when he was accused of raping a starlet at a wild party, which had resulted in her death a few days later. Despite being eventually acquitted, he had been dragged through the press through three trials, and it was pretty much too late to salvage his career…and many of his films were destroyed and no longer shown as a result.

  After 101 years, I've finally seen a Fatty Arbuckle comedy. And it was a fun half-hour! Something this old isn't going to age well under almost any circumstance, but there's still some solid physical comedy on display here.

  I can't say I'm a fan of the high contrast greasepaint look of most silent film performers. I understand why it was done, but it's super off-putting. Fatty looks like a zombified Tor Johnson with hair.

  Originally shown in two parts, this Keystone comedy clocks in just under 30-minutes and is quite ambitious for its type. The film has Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle playing an abused man constantly being harassed by his mother-in-law. After getting some courage from alcohol, he finally manages to put her in her place but when he goes to walk it off he has an innocent encounter with a woman (Louise Fazenda) and this doesn't sit too well with her angry husband (Edgar Kennedy).

  Upset by her demanding and exacting attitude, Fatty drunkenly confronts his mother-in-law and storms out of the house. While sitting on a park bench, he's accidentally photographed with another man's wife. When the offended husband threatens Fatty, he runs home, packs his bags, and flees.

  In his absence, Fatty's wife rents a room in their spacious home to the same couple. A repentant Fatty comes home and once again encounters the angry husband.

  Fatty's drunken rampage is funny and there's an impressive stunt involving electrical wires, but there are long stretches of set-up for a relatively small payoff.
