”What is the mission?”
“You don’t need to know”
This solid directorial debut from writer Matt Carnahan recounts the true story of a renegade SWAT team waging a guerrilla style operation against ISIS in an effort to reclaim their home city of Mosul.
It feels a bit like an Iraqi version of Greyhound in that we're dropped right into the middle of the war with no explanation or buildup as we experience the mission through a young recruit’s perspective. There’s very little plot or character development, but a ton of action where it’s made clear that anyone could die at any moment, and this makes it a challenge for the viewer to become fully invested.
On the plus side, it all looks and feels very real, and the actors do a bang-up job of giving it their all.
”You’ve heard the stories about us?”
“They’re all true”
