  if i’m being honest, the idea of seeing this film is something that has been keeping me going for these past few months. it’s like i’ve been holding it in my pocket all this time, protecting it. it’s a strange experience, protecting something when you don’t yet know what it is, or what it will become to you. the idea & anticipation becomes its own thing, separate from the art itself. but watching it today, i only want to protect it more. seeing it was like holding a light in my hands, no longer tucked away for another time, but still close to me while becoming something more real & vivid.

  naturalist tendercore perfection. the Magaro performance is not just sensitive but absorbing—here is a character who feels the texture of the world with such fullness, who in a moment of stillness seeks out wildflowers. Orion Lee is equal parts shrewd and tender. we know from the onset the price he will pay for a friend. the titular cow—don’t get me started. it’s tough to think of a movie that will stick with me more this year. my heart is so heavy!

  Just an unstoppably lovely film, with two great lead perfs and the cutest cow I have ever seen. Reichardt seems to almost be showing off with her use of the 4:3 aspect ratio. Far from feeling boxed in, these images are towering and expansive. But more than just being a film about stereotypical Reichardt themes like friendship and nature and survival, it’s about how shitty it is that you need money to live and how that requirement infects the sublimity of your passions. Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free? Because sometimes the world doesn’t give you the option.

  Never mind the intriguing cross-references to McCabe and Mrs. Miller  & Dead Man. This sings its own tragicomic song, creates its own bittersweet space, recounts its own version of the same doomed history.
