Criterion Channel, film #47

Staying up late last Saturday night, I tried to get as many films in for the two weeks I was trying it out. A lot of them were shorts. A lot of them were good. Some of them — including this one — were pretty bad. 

However, I'm always willing to check out French films. This features Emmanuelle Béart in one of her first roles. 

Some of the movie is very weird, like a girl spies on other people's sexual encounters. Seriously, what? This movie was pretty much a waste of time.

I feel like I'm supposed to be a pedophile to like this movie. needless to say I am not

I think I have to be a privelaged French pedophile to understand the point of this and stay awake watching it.

Hat längst nicht mehr das Production Value von BILITIS und dümpelt nach einem einigermaßen guten Beginn höhepunktlos vor sich hin, ohne jedoch komplett zu langweilen. Sogar die hüllenlosen Szenen sind ziemlich rar gesät, sodass dies auch nicht in irgendwelche aufgeilenden Altherrenphantasien abgleitet.

I really only watched this because I have a thing for Emmanuelle Beart. She was so young in this film however, that I barely recognized her. She actually got better looking and sexier as she got older. As far as the film goes, it's a snooze.

Well, that was stupid.

Pure escapism. It’s like taking a vacation. Pastels, water, and the Mediterranean. Picturesque.

Glad I didn’t know about David Hamilton’s personal controversies before watching this languid, relaxed piece of art house softcore fluff. Beautiful score too.

It's a shame David Hamilton was a pedo because his work is beautiful. It makes me uncomfortable though. I couldn't separate the artist from the work. Sorry it's too hard.

I blame bob for posting the LB of this movie and I blame myself for then watching it. This was, as the french would say, rien.

Criterion challenge: Romance

turns out when boring people take their clothes off they're still boring

This film was boring as hell. And worst of all, you can tell the director is male 🤦‍♀️  The obsession of the young and innocent yet sexualized girls was apparent, their characters were all so...simple. Boring. And the dramatic violin every time something sexual happened made it cheesy. But the landscapes and pastels though? *chefs kiss* so dreamy

I just wanted sex on my screen

If you can't handle a film about sex featuring fully nude 18+-year old women shot with soft-focus lenses, find something else to watch. If you're unable to separate the art from the artist and assume Hamilton was guilty of all he was accused, save yourself some grief and move on to another film.

All told, this is merely an extended photo-shoot with just enough story to advance the plot. There are no fascinating, multi-dimensional characters. It's not a great piece of cinema but it's certainly not terrible.

Why did I watch this? I don't know why I watched this. I wish I hadn't watched this.

Basically all this movie has to say is to not be a prude, and nudity is beautiful. That part is fine, but then it also is about how this girl first feels sexual attraction, which I think actually undermines the message against prudishness. Because while sexuality is beautiful, and nudity is also beautiful, I think separating the two is the only way to make strides against the forces of Western prudishness. This is too advanced; it shows a world where they've already been fine with nudity, and are just discovering sexuality. In a society that is still shocked by nudity, we aren't ready to talk so openly about sexuality.
