Meryl Streep got her 20th Nomination for the 2017 Oscars because of this film. I'm not trying to take anything away from that achievement but the Academy is so far up Meryl's ass they can hear her jaw click.
me: so this looks like some lighthearted oscar-magnet vapidity, love it, love meryl, sign me up,
florence foster jenkins (2016): is a 110 minute advertisement for gaslighting, makes a terrible rape joke within fifteen minutes for absolutely zero reason, completely infantilises its protagonist due to her self-enforced celibacy (because of course a sexless woman is a useless, pitiful creature), includes a cast member from the big bang theory in a substantial role & thus forces me to actually look at his face for more than a second before angrily banging on the remote to change the channel, is subtly yet consistently cruel to all passionate or enthusiastic women while venerating its male characters for exactly the same behaviour, and - the…
if I was rich I would pay everyone to be nice to me and protect me from the harsh truths of reality too
if florence lived in this decade you know she’d make vines of herself singing and become a meme
Passionate Movie About Passionate Woman Turns Into Passionate Success Story Of The Men In Her Life
The most provocative aspect of the tragicomic Florence Foster Jenkins is the questions this film inadvertently creates about confirmation bias. I remember first watching this lark back in the winter of '16: just before the inauguration of Agent Orange (to use Spike's terminology). Odd how prescient this unassuming tale about preserving the insulated echo chamber for an aristocratic patron of the arts proved to be.
The lengths that Florence's (Meryl Streep) husband St. Clair Bayfield (Hugh Grant) will go to protect his terminally ill wife’s sheltered self-awareness is fascinating. Money is key to keeping up the ruse: St. Clair profligately hires impressionable flunkeys (the pianist / the vocal coach), comps the commission costs to concerts to plant Verdi Club performances…
I realize it's mostly been a steady but gradual dropoff for Frears but honestly just how did we get here?
Always follow your dreams. Maybe one day Meryl Streep will portray you in a mediocre biopic.
It's a perfectly fine film. Well-written, well-acted with beautiful set-pieces and fun side characters. It made me laugh out loud several times. It was just a joy to watch but definitely not a necessity.
Smarmy Hugh Grant had to die in Bridget Jones to let him be resurrected here, where he is constantly towing the line between manipulative and sad-puppy. Loved it.
Really this film is just what happens when you let rich white women have hobbies--pure denial and eventual disillusionment.
Meryl Streep is just... oh you know what she is. Say it all together now GREATEST ACTRESS OF ALL TIME!
An engaging, big-hearted comedy about a woman whose dreams outweighed her talent, "Florence Foster Jenkins" is a solidly entertaining piece of work. Featuring Meryl Streep as a woman of wealth pursuing a goal of becoming a songstress, the film easily charms.
Based on real events, "Florence Foster Jenkins" finds its socialite protagonist meeting with a desire to sing. Sing she does, though the women lacks the vocal capablities to inspire anyone to want to listen to her. Still, supported by her husband and her pianist, the titular character catches the ears of her contemporaries and gains a measure of fame.
Directed by Stephen Frears, the film is buoyant and neatly assembled. Sets and costumes capture the textures of the 1940s,…
