Superficially entertaining for a lot of perfectly good reasons, and yet the idea of Mark Wahlberg vs. gentrification seems dubious.
Always kinda figured based on premise that this was a dour crime drama thing so I was not at all expecting this to practically be a blaxploitation action movie when I threw it on. Some of the casting is very funny but in a way that interacted well with the kind of movie it's trying be (there are some insane lines thrown to Wahlberg to deliver in here lol) and Singleton directs the hell out of it, lots of fantastic Detroit detail and sudden explosive chases/shootouts. Deserves a permanent rotation slot on AMC.
mark wahlberg in his most challenging role yet: acting like a brother to 2 pocs
An energetic action film with a touch of heart, John Singleton's "Four Brothers" is a surprisingly potent piece of work. Engaging from the outset, the story of four adopted brothers who set out avenge the death of their mother moves quickly and has plenty of robust. It is a well-cast, well-constructed action effort.
Starring Mark Wahlberg, Andre Benjamin, Tyrese Gibson, and Garrett Hedlund as four young men brought together under the roof of their patient and generous adopted mother, the film follows the men as they come together once again after their mother is gunned down during a robbery. Uncovering the corruption and criminal behavior that led to their mother's demise, the four take on Detroit's underbelly in fits of…
First viewing since theaters. I wouldn't argue that this is brilliant Singleton, but it has been somewhat undervalued, as it successfully clarifies what he was attempting to do with Shaft a few years prior. The film is broad, with a third act that is both wildly over-the-top and unnecessarily convoluted, but beneath the multiplex gloss lies a winning hangout movie and a gripping revenge thriller, its all-out exploitation vibe tempered only by how warmly these otherwise hard characters regard each other. With such a watchable cast, the premise is impossibly easy to buy into, so much so that when the small-time scores and the snowbound slaughter add up not to Fargo but to Mark Wahlberg mythically Omar Sharif-ing it across a frozen lake to kick somebody's ass, one doesn't ask questions.
“She saw a lot that was terrible, but she stayed hopeful. She still believed that things were getting better, sometimes despite all evidence. And that's a hard thing to do, stay hopeful. Even when you can't find a reason.”
Losing your mom, especially in a tragic incident, has got to be one of the worst things I can imagine happening. I remember seeing this film at a young age & that always made me really emotional early on in the film. Wahlberg’s performance with Gibson, Hedlund & Benjamin’s brother dynamic always hit home real hard for me. I just love to see how they came together and reminisce in their mothers house, the house she raised them in.
