I love Fright Night 2 just as much as I love the initial Fright Night, if not more. Tommy Lee Wallace is a brilliant, stylish director of horror sequelae who really loves bugs exploding from inside of people. If you are concerned that vampires are coming to this country to take our traditional horror movie hosting jobs just to replace them with old-fangled interpretive dance, Fright Night 2 will not allay those fears whatsoever! Fright Night 2 has more and better vampires, Brian Thompson as a Renfield of cultivated tastes and an extended vampire bowling party sequence. My love for the original Fright Night had me curious to check this one out. It's quite commonly known that Fright Night Part 2 has not been treated well over the years, from it's extremely limited theatrical release (cremating it's death at the box-office) to a lack of availability on home video. It's a shame this film never got the chance it deserved, because I'd say this is a pretty damn good follow-up.

I'm surprised it took me this long to see this but I'm glad I finally did! A film that was fairly elusive as far as 80s horror goes, it would creep into my mind from time to time. And that all white poster art was pretty memorable back in the day! While not as polished as the original this sequel is still loaded with 80s charm. And it has a freakin rollerblading vampire!

The script is a nonstarter, flimsy and unoriginal, yet the film offers surface pleasures nonetheless: it's fun to see Roddy McDowall playing detective again, Julie Carmen's Regine is an instantly alluring screen presence, and Tommy Lee Wallace (the reason I finally got around to watching this) provides a number of atmospheric stalking and seduction sequences. The introduction of Russell Clark's Belle, rollerblading out of a nightmarish haze and ready to feast, makes for an unforgettable visual.
Three years after the events of Fright Night, Charlie has been brainwashed by a psychiatrist that the events of the first movie were all in his head. The missing/dead characters are never explained. As soon as his therapy is over, a sexy lady vampire bites him. The very premise of this sequel feels like a tacked-on money grab.
The characters in this movie are the worst! Only Roddy McDowell’s character has returned as a supporting actor, he gets a pass because he’s fine but isn’t given enough “moments”. As far as horror sequels, this is comparable to Scream 2 with its main character still dealing with events from the past while transitioning to university life. Unsung returnee William Ragsdale is effectively goofy and likable as Charlie Brewster. One of the qualities of these films has been the geniality of the cast. John Gries is particularly brilliant as a horndog shapeshifter that takes full advantage of his ability to scale dorm walls and peep at female co-eds. The film also makes exceptional use of the vast and imposing Westwood UCLA campus. There's almost a DePalma sensibility to the way Charlie's surveillance moments are shot and scored as he tracks potential vampires through dreamy, hazy nights.
I love the life that this series gives to vampires. The entire concept of vampires is pretty silly but these movies make it feel somewhat plausible in the modern world. This wasn't a bad sequel to a horror movie and I loved everything to do with the vampires.
There's no Chris Sarandon, but boy do I love the addition of Julie Carmen and Traci Lind in this. Though it's not as singularly focused as the first one, director of Halloween III: Season of the Witch Tommy Lee Wallace brings the same energy of that film over to this one. Some terrific special effects in the third act.
