An early great in Czech cinema. An anomalous, proto-feminist love story that takes place over the course of a single night. Our lead, Mana (or Mary, either of which works for her), doesn't so much encounter enormous mishaps & zany characters -- instead it's mostly a night of small, quietly underscored moments. Mana growing bored while her socialite friend waltzes. A man, passed out drunk, whose breath shutters a nearby flower's petals. Fleeing the rain. Milk curd in coffee. There's certainly melodrama (suicide attempt, a love that blossoms in record time) but it's the clever & poetic attention to detail that makes it unique.
