Bette was having some fun with this role you could tell, being sassy and fabulous and showing how much better she is than the men. Quite an energetic performance from her. The movie itself is a bit meh, could take or leave, but Bette is a joy no matter what.
Heavily-dated gender politics aside, I thought this was a banger. Bette Davis and George Brent play sparring lovers working for separate newspapers, he always trying to convince her that she's a "bum newspaperman" so she will settle down and be his wifey, while she works extra-hard to outsmart him. They go to war over a murder case that she detects first and then they go back-and-forth getting the drop on one another. Sure, the sexism is pretty intolerable, and there's nothing worse than George Brent when he's playing smarmy, but Davis makes this with her spunk and determination, and it's a pretty amusing story. The plot of Front Page Woman is pretty boring and the writing is crap, but I enjoyed looking at it. Bette Davis wears crazy outfits and has bags under her eyes like she filmed this coming off a three day coke binge. She’s unspeakably gorgeous, as always. Various early-to-mid-1930s outfits and hairstyles and sets occur, and they look marvelous.
Bette Davis and George Brent spar as charming, ethically challenged rival journalists back when 15 newspapers fought it out each day for New York City’s nickels. Ace reporters and ace direction from Curtiz can’t overcome cub writing. This feels like a treatment for a great screwball murder mystery but without Ben Hecht’s dialogue, stocked instead with cliché and misogeny for yucks. This is an early example of the battle of the sexes in the newsroom sub-genre that His Girl Friday and Woman of the Year would improve upon later.
Davis is great, Brent is a total dick and deserved absolutely nothing but hey, it's the fucking '30s.
A playful newspaper affair where George Brent was having the time of his life 1-up-ing Bette Davis so she'd surrender and marry him. The sabotaging was almost cruel considering this was a romance comedy! And few men has had the honor of humiliating Davis this way. It's usually the other way around. Well, justice comes, but Brent sure was leading most of the film in the race for the big story. This wasn't of the best written scripts, but they had a good scenario and solid comic help from Roscoe Karns who was a valuable asset here.

3. Bette Davis clearly should have just teamed up with Nell—who the movie uses as a brief joke about how Lady Journalists Are Mannish—and left all the newsbro jackasses in the dust.
Fun but whimsical little newspaper picture, a screwball murder mystery with Bette Davis and George Brent as lovers reporting for competing newspapers. The plot is contrived and hardly what you'd call a realistic depiction of the business, but it is a cute battle of the sexes romance with Davis on suitably feisty form, able to keep Brent's casual misogyny in check every step of the way and prove she's just as a good a journalist as he is, though the slack script doesn't exactly give her the fairest treatment. These two Warner stars worked together a lot during this period so the chemistry is a given and they make a great screen couple, though the film is a largely unremarkable precursor to the far superior likes of His Girl Friday and The Philadelphia Story.

The worst thing about journalism being dead or whatever is how the newspaper comedy hath suffered a similar fate! This isn’t a particularly good one—the gender role nonsense is TRASH—but I always love Bette Davis as a hot blonde.
It sounded so promising. 1930s film with Bette Davis and George Brent as rival reporters, investigating a murder and engaged in a private competition to prove just who is the better reporter.
His Girl Friday this is not.
George Brent's character is sexist as hell but so then is the screenplay. Bette Davis' character is alternatively weak, incompetent, and stupid. Brent's character has to resort to subterfuge and privilege to stay ahead of her, but I think that's an entirely inadvertent subtext.
The mystery isn't particularly interesting either.
Take my advice and go watch something else.
