loved this! very funny, has an incredible grimy texture that i really dug, and not just because the production design is disgusting in the best way. when i saw the safdie producer credits it all made so much sense
This has also happened to me whenever I’ve tried to overcome my bourgeois upbringing and befriend underground eccentrics. In all seriousness, very funny, admirably prickly, and with impressive texture. Full of faces that look drawn by Drew Friedman or R. Crumb. Louise Lasser’s cameo hits like a silver bullet. Congrats to my treasured Letterboxd mutual Owen.
Really loved this. Full disclosure: I saw it at a fancy Hollywood screening and was swept away by how cool that was, so take my review with a grain of salt. Not like how you usually do where you live and die by my every word.
For obvious reasons this hit me very close to the bone. I loved that the kid's art is all done by Johnny Ryan. It makes sense that an actually gifted (the real way, not in the whine about it on Twitter way) kid rebelling against his suburban world would make art like that. I had no idea this was a Safdie Bros. production when I started this, but I certainly knew it by the end. What starts as a coming of age dramedy about an aspiring comic book artist, degenerates into an anxiety filled final act akin to Uncut Gems or Good Time. This even features some recurring Safdie Bros characters. I was on board with this for most of the run time. Daniel Zolghadri was a sympathetic protagonist despite some poor decisions and maybe being kind of an ass to his best friend. The final act, however, didn’t work as well, unfortunately.
