I’ve watched “Funny People” more times than I care to count (fun fact: Judd Apatow movies comprise roughly 40% of all cable television programming), but it never occurred to me that Apatow’s raw, shaggy, desperate masterpiece of a third feature was inspired by “The Great Gatsby.” For some reason, I didn’t automatically make the connection between The Great American Novel and a studio comedy in which Adam Sandler has sex with a stranger while pretending to be a Merman. But someone recently pointed out the parallel, and — like a Magic Eye stereogram or that bump on Jean-Claude Van Damme’s forehead — it’s the kind of thing that you can’t un-see.

Besides being a comedy legend to some and a comedy flop to others, if there's one thing Adam Sandler is good at, its his portrayal of a miserable person. He's so good at making me feel bad for him.
I'm glad Apatow chose him for this movie because he probably could've gotten any comedian but Sandler just fits the bill so well. Some jokes are a hit and some are a miss but I did enjoy this movie. I wish they put Sandler into more serious roles though.
like it or not this is probably as close as Apatow's gotten to the James L. Brooks movie he keeps trying to make. characteristically ungainly but at its best when it shades in the bubble culture it uses for a backdrop (something Brooks typically manages to much more successfully integrate with his narratives).

Adam Sandler basically plays himself in this: a comedian who does a lot of dumb movies and wants to be taken seriously. As he usually does when he gives a serious performance, he's actually great in this film. I actually would have felt a little more sympathetic for Sandler...

This is more a drama than a comedy but it is still full of funny moments, while keeping a good balance between comedy and drama. The jokes worked great and they didnt feel forced. The charachters were mostly comedians so it felt natural that they would come up with jokes and make fun of each other.

Apparently Adam Sandler turned the role of Bear Jew in Inglorious Basterds to be Greg Simmons in this film and I have to say that's a wise decision by Mr Sandler. Also wasn't expecting Bo Burnham to be in this but here we are. I guess Jason Schwartzmann is the only good thing in this.
